Primers

Priming is the difference between a coating that lasts and a coating that lifts. The full primer line answers every substrate question the site asks: water-based primers for porous concrete and render (Everflex Supaprime, Ardex WPM 265), epoxy moisture barriers for damp slabs (Ardex WPM 300, Gripset E-60), non-porous keys...

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every caulking job need primer?
No. Primer is selected according to the sealant system and substrate. Some products are designed for primerless adhesion on common surfaces, while porous, difficult or high-performance applications require a specified primer. Check the sealant technical data before applying anything to the joint.
How do I choose a primer?
Match the primer to the substrate and the sealant or adhesive system. Porous and non-porous surfaces may require different products, and some primers are specific to a manufacturer or chemistry. Confirm the approved combination, preparation method, coverage and drying window in the technical data.
How should primer be applied?
Apply a thin, even film to the clean bond area using the method specified by the manufacturer. Avoid pooling or contaminating adjacent finished surfaces. Allow the primer to flash or dry for the stated time before applying sealant; applying too soon can weaken the bond.
Can I use a general-purpose primer?
Only when the sealant manufacturer approves it for the exact substrate and application. A general-purpose primer is not automatically compatible with every silicone, polyurethane, acrylic or hybrid sealant. Use the product technical data as the authority and test the complete system where the joint is critical.
What happens if primer is applied incorrectly?
Excess primer, incomplete drying, contamination or use on an unsuitable surface can reduce adhesion and create visible defects. Remove failed preparation where possible, clean the surface again and repeat the approved process. Do not assume adding more primer will correct a preparation problem.
