Why protect a cured membrane?
Once a below-grade membrane is on, the next trade backfills, casts concrete or fixes materials against it. Without a protection layer, that work can puncture or score the membrane and cause a leak that is costly to reach and fix.
What is a protection board?
A rigid board placed over the cured membrane to resist impact and puncture during backfill and slab work. Corflute protection board is the stocked product. It goes on retaining walls, planter boxes and below-grade slabs.
What is the difference between a protection board and a drainage cell?
A protection board resists impact. A drainage cell creates a void that lets water drain away from the structure. They do different jobs and are often used together on below-grade walls.
Where is a geotextile used?
Between the drainage cell and the soil. It stops fine particles from clogging the drainage void. It goes against the drainage cell in below-grade wall and sub-surface drainage assemblies.
Do internal wet-area jobs need a protection layer?
No. Internal wet-area membranes are protected by the tile finish. Protection boards and drainage cells are for below-grade and buried membranes. Match the product spec to the job conditions before you start.
