Glazing Prep & Primers

Surface primers for sealing and bonding in architectural glazing and aluminium work. The right primer depends on the substrate, the sealant chemistry, and the manufacturer system. Porous surfaces and non-porous materials such as glass and metal each need a different preparation product.Apply primer to a clean, sound surface and let...

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a primer before sealing glass or aluminium?
Primer helps the sealant stick to a surface that would otherwise reject it. Glass, aluminium, and powder coat are non-porous and need an adhesion promoter. A clean surface and the right primer give the sealant something to grip.
When is Primer 50A the right choice?
Primer 50A is for non-porous substrates: glass, aluminium, powder coat, metals, plastics, fibreglass, stone, painted surfaces. Apply it sparingly to a clean, dry surface and let it dry as directed before applying the sealant. It is not a substitute for cleaning the surface first.
When do I need a primer for porous surfaces?
Use Everflex Supaprime or N40 Primer on absorbent substrates or where the sealant manufacturer calls for a primer. These cover porous surfaces and mixed building interfaces before sealants or adhesives. Check the product instructions and run an adhesion test if the instructions recommend one.
Do I always need a primer on aluminium?
Not always. It depends on the finish, the sealant, and the exposure. Primer 50A suits non-porous aluminium. Other primers suit different preparation systems. Check the product instructions for your sealant and run an adhesion test if the instructions recommend one.
What primer do I use on glass?
Primer 50A is documented for glass and other non-porous substrates. Clean the glass thoroughly first. There is no dedicated glass-cleaning product in this range. Wipe the surface with the cleaner recommended for your job and let it dry before applying the primer.
How do I know which primer matches my sealant?
Check the sealant manufacturer's instructions. Some systems require a specific primer on certain substrates. If the instructions say to use a primer, use one. If they say to test adhesion first, do that. The primer must suit both the substrate and the sealant system.
