Expanding Foams

Gaps too big for sealant and too awkward for backing rod belong to expanding foam: RLA Foam Filler and Mapepur Universal Foam M fill service penetrations, frame gaps, and cavity voids in one pass. Both cure rigid, trim flush with a blade, and take sealant or plaster over the top...

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an expanding foam used for?
Expanding foam fills gaps around window frames, door frames, pipes, and joints. It also provides thermal insulation and soundproofing. Both cure with moisture to fill irregular spaces.
What is the difference between hand-held and gun-grade foam?
MapePUR Universal Foam M/G offers two ways to apply it. The M version uses a hand lever with feed tube. The G version fits the MapePUR Gun Standard for controlled bead application on larger jobs. Both use the same polyurethane chemistry.
How long does expanding foam take to cure?
MapePUR skins in 25 to 30 minutes and cures in under 5 hours. RLA Foam Filler skins in 15 to 30 minutes but needs 8 hours before you can cut or sand it. Cure times vary with temperature and humidity.
Can I paint or render over cured expanding foam?
Yes. Both products accept paint after full cure. MapePUR also takes cementitious render skim coats. Cut or sand cured foam back to the surface first. Neither product tolerates direct UV exposure without a protective top coat.
How much expanding foam does one can produce?
MapePUR yields up to 45 litres from a 750 ml can. RLA yields 30 to 45 litres from a 500 ml can. Fill cavities to one third or half volume only. The foam expands to fill the remaining space on its own.
How do I clean up expanding foam?
Wipe uncured foam off skin and tools with a damp cloth before it sets. Once cured, foam must be cut or sanded back. It will not dissolve. Keep a rag nearby when you apply so you can clean up right away.
