What does a bond breaker actually do?
It stops the membrane gluing itself across a moving joint. With a slip zone in place, building movement stretches the membrane instead of tearing it. Without one, the membrane fails at the joint no matter how good the membrane is.
Where is bond breaking required?
AS 3740 calls it up at internal wall-floor corners, vertical joints, and movement or control joints in wet areas. Detail every change of plane and change of material before the membrane goes on.
What is the difference between the Elastoproof band and the Ardex tape?
Elastoproof is an elastic NBR band embedded into wet liquid membrane: fleece edges bond, rubber centre stays free, and it handles ongoing multi-directional movement. Ardex STB/STA is self-adhesive butyl tape applied first as a detail strip at drains and penetrations, with a fleece top that keys into the membrane.
Can I use regular duct tape as a bond breaker?
No. Membranes bond to many tape adhesives and the tape creases on corners, which transfers stress straight into the membrane. Use a product designed for the purpose.
Do these tapes suit all membranes?
The Ardex tape lists compatibility with specific Ardex membranes. The Elastoproof bands embed into most liquid-applied membranes. Check your membrane's data sheet for the bond-breaker requirement before you commit.
