What is the difference between a porous and non-porous substrate primer?
Porous substrate primers penetrate into absorbent surfaces such as concrete, brick, and masonry. Non-porous primers create a mechanical or chemical key on smooth surfaces such as glass, metal, and existing tiles. Always match the primer to the substrate type.
Can I dilute a porous substrate primer with water?
Most porous substrate primers apply neat. Mapei Primer G is the exception and accepts dilution from neat to one part primer to three parts water depending on the substrate. Check the product data sheet before diluting any primer.
How long after priming can I apply the next layer?
It varies by product. Most porous primers dry in 15 to 60 minutes. Bostik N49 has a four-hour overcoating window. RLA Rendergrip A has an eight-hour window. Silcor Primer BS allows up to 24 hours before overcoating.
Does a porous substrate primer stop moisture rising through the slab?
No. Porous substrate primers improve adhesion for membranes, adhesives, and toppings. They do not block moisture vapour transmission. For rising damp or hydrostatic pressure, use a moisture-barrier primer such as the Ardex WPM 300 or Gripset E-60 epoxy system.
Which porous substrate primer has the lowest VOC?
Mapei Primer G has zero VOC and carries the EC1 Plus certification. Ardex WPM 265 has 11 g/L. Everflex WBP has less than 16 g/L. Duram WB Primer has less than 20 g/L. All four are water-based products.
