For interior floor preparation where levelling compounds or cementitious adhesives must bond reliably to both absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces, Eco Prim T Plus Primer establishes a high-adhesion keyway. This solvent-free acrylic resin-based primer in water dispersion prepares challenging substrates—including very compact concrete, old adhesive residues, non-porous ceramic tiles, and moisture-stable timber—to prevent debonding and levelling failures.

How it works

Eco Prim T Plus Primer forms a flexible, water-resistant film that bridges the gap between the substrate and the subsequent smoothing compound or mortar. When applied to porous surfaces like cementitious renders or gypsum, it regulates substrate absorption to prevent the levelling compound from drying out too quickly. On non-absorbent surfaces like terrazzo, ceramic, or natural stone, it provides the mechanical grip necessary for cementitious materials to adhere. It also functions as a bonding aid over non-sanded epoxy or polyurethane moisture vapour barriers, such as Primer MF or Mapeproof 1K Turbo, provided the subsequent levelling layer is kept under 10 mm in thickness.

Numbers that matter

  • 0.10 to 0.20 kg/m² consumption: Coverage rate varies within this range depending on the porosity of your substrate and the application method.
  • 15 to 40 minute drying times: Rapid initial drying of 15 to 20 minutes on concrete and wood, and 30 to 40 minutes on non-porous ceramic.
  • 2 to 5 hour window before covering: Wait 2 to 3 hours over concrete or wood, and 4 to 5 hours over ceramic before applying adhesives or smoothing compounds. Do not wait longer than 24 hours.
  • 42% dry solids content: High-solids fluid liquid formulation (density of 1.02 g/cm³) that delivers consistent film build by brush or roller.
  • ASTM D 1308-87 compliance: Meets the standard for resistance to urine, making it suitable for specialized commercial floor installations.

Where to use it

  • Absorbent substrates: Cementitious renders, concrete floors, gypsum, anhydrite, wood, marine plywood, and chipboard.
  • Non-absorbent substrates: Existing ceramic tiles, terrazzo, natural stone, and water-resistant old adhesive residues.
  • Barrier consolidation: Substrates waterproofed or consolidated with Primer MF or Mapeproof 1K Turbo, where the surface has not been sprinkled with sand.

Limitations

  • Interior use only: Apply Eco Prim T Plus Primer only on internal flooring.
  • No rising damp: Do not apply on substrates subject to rising damp or hydrostatic pressure. Unbonded screeds over light-weight concrete or bare ground must have a vapour barrier.
  • Timber stability: Apply only on moisture-stable wood and timber substrates.
  • Substrate exclusions: Do not use on magnesium substrates; use Primer EP or Mapeprim SP instead.

Application and dilution

Ensure all substrates are uniformly dry, sound, and free of dust, loose particles, paint, wax, oil, rust, or other bond-inhibiting contaminants. Apply the primer using a brush or roller. Dilute the primer 1 to 2 with water when applying to absorbent cementitious or anhydrite surfaces. Apply undiluted on non-porous surfaces, including existing ceramic tile, natural stone, wood, and water-resistant adhesive residues. For applications over unsanded Primer MF or Mapeproof 1K Turbo moisture barriers, apply Eco Prim T Plus Primer undiluted once the barrier is dry (2 to 4 hours) and strictly within 24 hours of the barrier application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Eco Prim T Plus be used on substrates with rising damp?

No. Eco Prim T Plus must be applied only to dry substrates. For screeds over bare ground or lightweight concrete, install a vapour barrier first to avoid adhesion failure.

How long can I wait before applying the levelling compound?

Apply levelling compounds within 24 hours of priming. Waiting longer can reduce bond strength and may require re-priming.

Should Eco Prim T Plus be diluted?

Yes, dilute 1:2 with clean water for absorbent cementitious substrates. Use undiluted on ceramic, natural stone, wood, and adhesive residues.

What is the coverage rate of Eco Prim T Plus?

Coverage varies from 0.10 – 0.20 kg/m² depending on substrate porosity and application method (roller or brush).

Applying Mapei Eco Prim T Plus: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure the substrate is sound, dry, and free of contaminants. For unbonded screeds, verify a vapour barrier is installed to prevent rising damp.

Pro Tip: Always test moisture levels in concrete before priming – high moisture can compromise adhesion and void warranties.
  2. Mixing & Dilution

Use Eco Prim T Plus as supplied for non-absorbent substrates. Dilute 1:2 with water for absorbent screeds and concrete to ensure proper penetration.

Pro Tip: Mix thoroughly before use to maintain a uniform consistency and avoid patchy coverage.
  3. Application

Apply with a brush or roller, ensuring complete coverage without pooling. Avoid leaving puddles, which can create weak spots in adhesion.

Timing: Drying time is approx. 2–5 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Do not wait longer than 24 hours before applying levelling compounds.
  4. Clean Up

Clean tools, hands, and spills immediately with water. Once cured, remove with alcohol or Mapei Pulicol 2000.

Pro Tip: Keep a bucket of clean water and cloths nearby during application to make cleanup fast and efficient.

Mapei Eco Prim T Plus Application Guide

Concrete & Cementitious Screeds

Ensure the surface is structurally sound, uniformly dry, and free from dust, laitance, oils, and contaminants. Check moisture content and provide a vapour barrier if installed over bare ground or lightweight screeds.

Primer required for proper bonding of levelling compounds

Dilute Eco Prim T Plus 1:2 with clean water for highly absorbent screeds, apply by roller or brush, allow 2–3 hours to dry before proceeding.

Existing Ceramic & Natural Stone

Degrease and clean thoroughly, removing waxes and residues. Roughen smooth, glossy tiles if needed to improve key.

Use Eco Prim T Plus undiluted

Apply directly to tiles using a roller for even coverage. Allow 4–5 hours to dry before smoothing compound or adhesive application.

Timber, Plywood & Chipboard

Use only moisture-stable wood. Ensure boards are fixed securely, clean, and free from dust or oils.

Eco Prim T Plus required for levelling compounds

Apply one even coat undiluted with a brush or roller. Allow 2–3 hours drying time.

Substrates with Epoxy or PU Vapour Barriers

Ensure the vapour barrier is fully cured (typically 2–4 hours depending on product) and free from dust. Do not wait longer than 24 hours before priming.

Eco Prim T Plus required when no broadcast sand layer is present

Apply one coat undiluted to create a bonding bridge for smoothing compounds up to 10 mm thick.
