Screeds

When the floor covering can't wait, you need a screed that gets out of your way fast. This range covers rapid-set cement screeds engineered for Australian conditions — from 4-hour tile-ready formulations to high-strength options hitting 20 MPa or 35 MPa within 24 hours. Each product is designed to deliver...

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cement floor screed?
A cement screed is a layer of cement-based material laid over a concrete subfloor to form a new level surface, correct height differences, build thickness, and create ramps or drainage falls. It is the stage that shapes the floor before the covering or coating is installed.
When do I need a screed instead of a levelling compound?
Use a screed when the floor needs a new level, a build-up in height, or a shaped fall — typically from 15 mm up. Use a levelling compound when the floor is already level but has shallow dips and undulations that need smoothing. Screeds form the level; levelling compounds flatten the surface.
What does rapid-set mean for a screed?
Rapid-set screeds cure fast — foot traffic in two-to-four hours and tile-ready condition in about eight hours. That shortens the wait before the next stage of the floor build. Mapei Mapecemp Pronto drops below 2% residual moisture within 24 hours, so resilient and timber coverings can go down sooner than on a standard screed.
How thick can a screed be laid?
Bonded screeds in this range start at a 10-to-15 mm minimum and can be built up in lifts; unbonded and floating screeds start at 35-to-40 mm. Underfloor heating pipes must sit at least 25 mm below the screed surface. Always check each product's technical data for its minimum and maximum thickness before you plan the pour.
Can screeds be used outside or under tiles?
Yes. Several screeds in this range suit internal and external concrete, and most accept tiles, natural stone or terrazzo once cured. Some screeds are not suited to timber or metal substrates, and none should be immersed in water or laid where rising damp is present. Check the approved substrate list for each product.
