Frequently Asked Questions
What is a self-adhesive butyl rubber sheet membrane?
A self-adhesive butyl rubber sheet membrane is a pre-formed waterproof sheet with a high-tack butyl backing. It bonds on contact with no torch, flame, or solvent adhesive needed. Apply it to concrete, masonry, metals, plastics, and glazed surfaces.
What is the difference between BRW HD and BRW PFN?
BRW HD has an HDPE film facing for below-ground and structural use such as basement walls and retaining walls. BRW PFN has a fabric-laminated face for floor waterproofing under tiles and screeds in bathrooms and balconies. The facing material determines the application.
Do I need to wait for a sheet membrane to dry before tiling?
No. Self-adhesive butyl rubber sheet membranes bond on contact and need no drying time. Tile or screed directly over BRW PFN once the laps are sealed. BRW HD must be backfilled or covered with protection board.
Can I use a butyl sheet membrane on a vertical wall?
Yes. BRW HD suits vertical surfaces such as basement walls, lift pits, and planter boxes. Its HDPE film facing resists puncture from backfill. BRW PFN is for horizontal floor surfaces only and does not suit vertical application.
Do butyl sheet membranes need a primer?
It depends on the substrate. Use a compatible Gripset liquid membrane or primer at junctions, penetrations, and detail areas. Check the product data sheet for specific substrate preparation requirements. Always ensure the surface is clean and dry.
