What is a flooring adhesive?
A flooring adhesive is a purpose-built glue used to fix a floor covering to a prepared subfloor. It holds timber flat, absorbs seasonal movement, resists plasticiser migration from vinyl, and bonds to the substrate without becoming brittle.
What types of flooring adhesive are there?
The main types are moisture-curing polyurethane and hybrid MS polymer adhesives for timber, parquetry and wood blocks, and acrylic emulsion adhesives for sheet vinyl, luxury vinyl tile and rubber. Choose the chemistry for the covering.
How do I choose between polyurethane and MS polymer for timber?
Both bond timber and parquetry to a prepared subfloor. Polyurethane grades such as Bostik Ultraset SF stretch well and hold firmly. Hybrid MS polymer grades such as Adheseal X'traseal MS-608 suit sites that need an odourless solvent-free product.
Can I use one adhesive for both timber and vinyl?
No. Timber and vinyl need different adhesive chemistries. Use a parquetry or timber adhesive for timber, parquetry, engineered boards and wood blocks. Use an acrylic vinyl adhesive such as Ardex AF 171 for sheet vinyl, luxury vinyl tile and rubber.
What coverage does a flooring adhesive give?
Coverage depends on the trowel notch and the covering backing. Follow the trowel size and coverage listed in the technical data. A wider notch spreads more adhesive per square metre. The product page lists the trowel and the coverage for that grade.
Do I need to prime the subfloor before I spread flooring adhesive?
Sometimes. Dusty, sealed or non-porous substrates can stop some adhesives from bonding. Follow the primer notes in the technical data for the adhesive and the substrate you have. If the data says prime, prime.
