Frequently Asked Questions
Which primer do I need for my substrate?
Render, screed and fibre cement take a porous-substrate primer. Existing tiles or metal take a non-porous primer. Damp slabs need an epoxy moisture barrier instead of either.
Can I use the same primer for waterproofing and tiling?
Yes, where the membrane or adhesive manufacturer says so. Many primers cover both jobs. Check the primer schedule for the system you are using, not a generic list.
Why use a moisture-barrier primer?
It stops residual vapour pressure from the slab reaching a moisture-sensitive membrane or floor covering. Use it when the slab moisture content is high and the finish above will not tolerate it.
How long after priming can I apply the membrane?
Check the primer data sheet. Most need a flash-off or cure period first. If you apply the membrane too soon, solvent or water gets trapped under the film and the bond fails.
Do non-porous substrates need priming?
Yes. A porous-substrate primer will not key into a dense surface. Use the non-porous primer named by the membrane system you are installing. Without it, the membrane sits on the surface and can delaminate as it cures.
