ARDEX Multiprime is a quick-drying, water-based primer for porous surfaces before compatible ARDEX tile adhesives, waterproofing membranes and levelling systems. It helps create an even bonding surface on prepared concrete, cement render, screeds, masonry, aerated concrete and fibre-cement sheet.

Prepare porous surfaces for the next layer

Absorbent construction materials can draw moisture from the product applied over them. Multiprime reduces that problem and improves adhesion in approved ARDEX systems. The low-VOC, solvent-free formulation is suitable for internal and external walls and floors, provided the selected follow-on product and substrate are compatible.

Choose the right pack size

  • 4L: a practical pack for smaller rooms, patch work and moderate preparation areas.
  • 20L: a larger pack for ongoing tiling and waterproofing projects or substantial porous floor and wall areas.

Both options contain the same ARDEX Multiprime formulation. Select the required Size above to see the corresponding SKU, price and availability.

Application and product selection

Prepare the substrate until it is sound, clean and dry, then shake the primer and apply with a brush, roller or sponge. Allow approximately 15–30 minutes to dry in reference conditions before the next approved layer. Highly porous surfaces, such as AAC, may require a second coat. Coverage depends on surface porosity and installation method, so check the required consumption for the actual job.

Multiprime is not a universal non-porous surface primer. For glazed tiles, smooth dense surfaces or other low-absorption substrates, check whether a specialist bonding primer such as ARDEX P 9 is required. Multiprime does not replace a waterproofing membrane or a moisture barrier.

What is ARDEX Multiprime used for?
It primes porous substrates before approved ARDEX adhesives, levellers and waterproofing products.

What coverage should I allow?
Approximately 6m² per litre.

Can it be used outside?
Yes, in suitable ARDEX internal and external systems.

Can I use it on any substrate?
No. Use the substrates listed in the current TDS or confirm other surfaces with ARDEX Technical Services.

Quick-drying water-based primer for porous substrates before approved ARDEX products. Suitable for internal and external walls and floors. Improves adhesion without a solvent-based primer. Typical coverage is about 6m² per litre. Suitable for concrete, render, screed, masonry, fibre-cement sheet and lightweight concrete blocks.
Mechanically prepare and vacuum the substrate where required. Remove dust, curing compounds, oils, grease, sealers, coatings and other contaminants. Apply an even coat of ARDEX Multiprime to the porous substrate using a suitable brush or roller. Allow approximately 6m² per litre as a guide. Allow the primer to dry before applying the approved ARDEX subsequent product.
Use only on substrates approved by the current ARDEX TDS. Remove dirt, dust, curing compounds, oils, grease, sealers and existing coatings before application. Apply to a sound, clean and dry substrate. For substrates outside the stated list, confirm suitability with ARDEX Technical Services.
  • Concrete.
  • Render and screed.
  • Masonry and concrete blocks.
  • Autoclaved aerated concrete.
  • Fibre-cement sheet.
  • Jointing compound over plasterboard.

ARDEX Multiprime Water-Based Primer - Use Cases

Here are some common examples on where ARDEX Multiprime Water-Based Primer used by our customers.

Tiling

Enhance porous substrate adhesion

When needing to improve adhesion on concrete, screed, or masonry surfaces for approved ARDEX levelling compounds or adhesives.

Seals surfaces and consolidates dusty substrates, preventing suction and ensuring a consistent, strong bond for subsequent ARDEX applications.

  • Concrete, screed, render
  • Masonry, AAC (2 coats)
  • Water-based formula
  • Approved ARDEX products

Roofing

Concrete Roof Refurbishment Priming

Preparing built-up or repaired concrete roof areas before applying subsequent waterproofing layers in a multi-system build-up.

Improves inter-layer adhesion between existing prepared surfaces and new waterproofing applications, critical for system integrity in refurbishment.

  • Water-based liquid form
  • 0ºC to 80ºC service temperature
  • 5.03 MPa tensile strength
  • Applied before TuffTop membrane

Waterproofing

Prime internal wet areas

When preparing porous substrates in bathrooms, showers, or laundries before applying ARDEX waterproofing membranes and tile adhesives.

Its water-based, low VOC formulation quickly prepares surfaces, ensuring optimal adhesion for subsequent ARDEX products in moisture-prone zones.

  • Water-based primer
  • Low VOC content
  • 15-30 min drying time
  • Approved ARDEX products

Roofing

Reprime concrete roof surfaces

During concrete roof or balcony refurbishment, re-priming existing built-up areas before applying new ARDEX waterproofing systems.

Creates a clean, adherent base on previously treated concrete surfaces, ensuring reliable bond for subsequent ARDEX waterproofing membranes.

  • Concrete roofs, balconies
  • 15-30 min drying time
  • Internal/external use
  • Approved ARDEX products
