What makes a sealant suitable for sanitary use?

Sanitary sealants contain a fungicide that resists mould and mildew growth in wet areas. They are formulated for exposure to moisture, steam, and cleaning chemicals. All sanitary sealants use silicone chemistry for long-term flexibility in wet environments.

Can I use sanitary sealant in a shower?

Yes. Sanitary sealants work in showers, bathrooms, and wet areas where mould resistance matters. They are not designed for permanent water immersion or submerged applications such as pools and spas. For those, use a purpose-made pool sealant.

Should I choose a gloss or matte finish for sanitary silicone?

Matte sanitary silicone (such as the Adheseal Matt Seal S-250 and S-350) blends with tiled surfaces and resists showing dirt marks. Gloss silicone gives a shiny finish suited to glass and polished fixtures. Both contain fungicide.

Is sanitary sealant safe for food preparation areas?

The Bostik 6S sanitary sealant carries the NZFSA-C82 food-safe certification. Other sanitary silicone sealants are not certified for direct food contact. Check the product data sheet if the sealant will contact food or food preparation surfaces.

What is the difference between neutral-cure and acetic-cure sanitary silicone?

Neutral-cure silicone releases no acetic acid during curing, so it will not corrode metals or etch sensitive surfaces. Acetic-cure silicone (such as the Mapei Mapesil AC) sets faster but may smell of vinegar during application.

For most mixed-material bathroom and kitchen work, a neutral-cure sanitary silicone is a practical starting point because it is non-corrosive to compatible metals and works across common substrates such as ceramic tile, porcelain, glass, aluminium, sanitary acrylics and laminated surfaces. Acetic-cure silicones remain an excellent choice where their substrate compatibility and tile-system benefits suit the installation.

Neutral cure vs acetic cure sanitary silicone

Neutral-cure silicone is the more versatile option across mixed wet-area substrates and is commonly chosen around metal fixtures, aluminium, sanitary acrylics, glass and tiled surfaces. S100, Matt Seal S-350, SA Sanitary, Pasco Hypersil 912 and Bostik 6S are neutral-cure sanitary silicones.

Acetic-cure silicone offers excellent performance on compatible non-porous materials such as ceramic and glass but needs closer attention to substrate compatibility. Mapesil AC is the specialist acetic-cure option in this range and is particularly useful where colour coordination with Mapei grout systems matters.

Mould-resistant silicone for wet areas

Bathrooms and showers create the warm, humid conditions that encourage mould and mildew growth. Sanitary-grade formulations use mould-resistant or anti-fungal technology to help keep the cured joint cleaner for longer. Good ventilation, correct joint preparation and routine cleaning are still important, because no sanitary sealant can prevent mould caused by persistent surface contamination or moisture problems around the joint.

Gloss or matt bathroom silicone?

Traditional sanitary silicone cures with a smooth gloss appearance that suits most tile, sanitary ware and benchtop installations. S100 is the broad-range choice where colour selection and general wet-area versatility are priorities.

Where the joint needs to visually disappear into modern tiles, grout or low-sheen fixtures, Matt Seal S-350 provides a dedicated matt finish in Arctic White and Ebony.

Sanitary silicone is not the waterproofing membrane

Sanitary silicone seals the movement and connection joints around a wet-area installation. It does not replace the compliant waterproofing membrane behind tiles or other finishes. Likewise, not every bathroom silicone is suitable for permanent immersion, pools or aquariums. Check the selected product's approved applications before using it below the waterline or in continuously submerged joints.
