What does a penetrating sealer do?
It soaks into a porous substrate and blocks water ingress without forming a surface film. Adheseal Showerseal, EP Waterproof Supreme, EP Waterproofing System, Megapoxy LVS, Duram S900 and Azcoseal are the stocked options. Use them on grout, masonry and porous stone.
When do I use a sealer instead of a sealant?
Use a sealer to protect a porous surface from water absorption without filling a joint, for example on grout lines, masonry or porous stone. Use a sealant to fill and seal a gap, junction or movement joint.
Can a sealer replace a waterproof membrane?
No. A penetrating sealer manages surface moisture. It does not form the continuous barrier a membrane provides. In a wet area the membrane is the primary barrier. A sealer may supplement it at grout or porous surfaces.
Will a sealer show on the surface?
A true penetrating sealer absorbs into the substrate and does not change the surface appearance. Some barrier-type sealers leave a thin film. Check the product data sheet for the finish and recoat instructions.
How long does a penetrating sealer last?
It depends on the substrate, exposure and traffic. Most need periodic reapplication in wet or high-traffic areas. Follow the manufacturer's recoat schedule and test absorption before re-treating.
