How does a swellable waterstop work?
It is embedded in fresh concrete across the construction joint. If water later travels the joint, the hydrophilic compound swells on contact and seals the gap without any moving parts.
Where do waterstops go?
Construction and cold joints below ground: basements, tanks, tunnels, retaining walls - anywhere the joint sits permanently against moisture. Match the product spec to the job conditions before you start.
Do the brands differ?
In profile size, swell rate, and expansion volume. Match the strip to the joint design and hydrostatic pressure on the project spec rather than price alone.
Can waterstops be joined on site?
Yes. Butt joins with the manufacturer's adhesive or mastic keep the swell strip continuous; a gap at a join becomes the leak path the strip exists to prevent.
How are they fixed before the pour?
Nail or adhesive-fix the strip to the set concrete down the joint line so it cannot move when the pour goes over. Keep it centred on the joint.
