What is the difference between a moisture-barrier primer and a regular primer?
A moisture-barrier primer blocks water vapour and hydrostatic pressure from the substrate. A regular primer improves adhesion only. Moisture-barrier primers use two-part epoxy chemistry and need a minimum dry film thickness to perform.
Which moisture-barrier primers resist hydrostatic pressure?
Ardex WPM 300, Gripset E-60, RLA Moisture Seal, and Everflex VBS all resist hydrostatic pressure up to 25 metres of water head. Gripset H2O Plus and Mapeproof 1K Turbo manage vapour transmission only and are not rated for hydrostatic conditions.
Can I use a single-component moisture-barrier primer?
Yes. Mapeproof 1K Turbo is a single-component polyurethane that tolerates substrates up to 95% relative humidity. Gripset H2O Plus is another single-component option with a colour-change drying indicator. Both suit vapour control but not hydrostatic pressure.
How thick does a moisture-barrier primer need to be?
Most two-part epoxy moisture-barrier primers need 300 microns dry film thickness across two coats. The first coat often accepts water dilution for penetration on porous substrates. Sand-seed between coats for tiling or screeding over the barrier.
Are any moisture-barrier primers trafficable?
Yes. Megapoxy 154 is the only trafficable moisture-barrier primer here. It supports foot traffic and light vehicles once cured. It is a two-part epoxy that also works as a dust sealer. It does not bridge cracks and yellows under UV.
