What tools do I need to install a welded sheet membrane?
A hot-air heat gun for manual welding at corners, penetrations and detail work, and a semi-automatic welder for long straight seams. Leister Triac AT or ST are the heat guns. Leister Unidrive 500 is the welder.
Can I use a heat gun for other waterproofing work?
No. A hot-air heat gun is for thermoplastic and PVC sheet-membrane systems only. It is not for liquid-applied membranes, cementitious coatings or self-adhesive bitumen sheets. Match the tool to the membrane.
What is the difference between a heat gun and a semi-automatic welder?
A heat gun is hand-held. The operator controls the speed and pressure. A semi-automatic welder like the Leister Unidrive 500 self-propels along the seam at a set speed for consistent welds on long runs. Most jobs use both.
Are these tools required for liquid membranes?
No. Liquid membranes are rolled or brushed on. Welding tools only apply to sheet membranes where seams must be heat-welded. You do not need a heat gun or welder for liquid-applied systems.
Can I hire these tools or do I need to buy them?
