What does a universal substrate primer do?
A universal substrate primer improves the bond between the substrate and the membrane, adhesive, or levelling compound applied over it. Apply it neat on non-porous surfaces and diluted with water on porous surfaces. One product handles both conditions.
How do I know if my substrate is porous or non-porous?
Place a few drops of water on the surface. If the water absorbs within two minutes, the substrate is porous and the primer needs dilution. If the water sits on the surface, it is non-porous and the primer goes on neat.
Can I use a universal primer on existing tiles?
Yes. Most universal primers bond to sound, clean ceramic tiles. The primer creates a grip layer for the new adhesive or membrane on top. Sand or mechanically abrade glossy or waxed tiles first. Check the specific product for tile-over limitations.
Does a universal primer stop moisture coming through the slab?
No. A universal substrate primer improves adhesion. It does not act as a moisture barrier. If the slab has rising damp or hydrostatic pressure, use a moisture-barrier primer instead. The RLA and Mapei primers also have a maximum relative humidity limit.
How long after priming can I apply the membrane or adhesive?
It depends on the product. Ardex P 9 dries in about 20 minutes. Everflex Multi-Prime takes one hour. Mapei Eco Prim T Plus has a two to five hour overcoating window. Apply the next layer within the recommended time.
