For high-adhesion priming on non-porous, dense, and smooth substrates where standard absorbing primers cannot bond, Gripset Xpress SP Primer provides a solvent-free alternative to hazardous solvent-based systems. It is formulated to enable the direct application of Gripset self-adhesive sheet and liquid membrane systems over challenging wall and floor surfaces without the need for chemical etching or grinding.

What it does

Xpress SP Primer creates a high-strength physical key over smooth substrates, achieving mechanical adhesion over glazed ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles, natural stone, and metals without modifying the substrate surface. It dries to a non-tacky, low-dirt-retention finish that prevents contamination before the membrane or adhesive layer is applied. Because the formula has nil VOC content, it meets the requirements of Green Star Rating tools for multi-unit residential, commercial, and healthcare developments.

Numbers that matter

  • 30-minute dry time: Fast-drying window at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, allowing rapid progression to the membrane application.
  • 0.83 MPa adhesion to glazed tiles: Verified bond strength directly to glazed surfaces, eliminating the need for mechanical etching or chemical profiling.
  • 0.8 MPa adhesion to James Hardie Scyon: Reliable structural bond directly to Scyon Secura external and internal flooring systems.
  • 1 Litre per 12m² minimum coverage: Direct coverage rate on smooth, non-porous surfaces such as metal, glass reinforced concrete, and glazed tiles. Porous or highly absorbent substrates may require up to 1 Litre per m².

Where to use it

Suitable for commercial, industrial, and residential applications on both walls and floors. Compatible substrates include:

  • Metals including galvanised iron, zincalume, aluminium, stainless steel, copper, brass treated steel, and colorbond sheeting.
  • Existing ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles, natural stone, and glazed surfaces.
  • Precast concrete, tilt-up concrete, and glass reinforced concrete.
  • James Hardie Scyon Secura external and internal flooring.
  • Hardwood, dense timber surfaces, marine plywood, and timber sheet surfaces.
  • Brickwork (clay and concrete), compressed cement sheeting, and plasterboard.
  • Polymer mortars, synthetic mortars, and smooth self-levelling compounds.

Limitations

  • Do not use as a primer in areas subject to rising moisture or negative hydrostatic pressure.
  • Do not use in immersed applications such as pools or water tanks.

Installation and surface preparation

All substrates must be structurally sound, smooth, stable, dry, clean, and free from loose material, de-bonded coatings, curing compounds, release agents, laitance, or grease. Structurally unsound layers must be mechanically removed by grinding, abrasive blasting, or blast tracking.

Stir the primer thoroughly before application. Apply an even coat using a low-nap roller or a long-bristle brush. For spray application parameters, contact Gripset Technical Services. Clean up tools with water while the primer is wet; once dry, the product must be removed mechanically or with a solvent.

Applying Gripset Xpress SP: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure substrates are structurally sound, smooth, dry and clean. Remove dust, oils, release/curing agents, laitance, loose coatings and contaminants. Mechanically abrade/deglose glossy areas; repair voids and defects before priming.

    Method A — Mechanical Prep

Grind or abrade dense/smooth surfaces (e.g., glazed tiles, metals) to create a uniform key; vacuum thoroughly.

    Method B — Solvent/Degrease Clean

On metals and rigid plastics, solvent-wipe to remove oils/grease after abrasion. Allow to dry completely before priming.

Timing: Proceed only when the surface is dry and dust-free.
Pro Tip: Point masonry/blockwork flush and patch defects to avoid low spots that trap excess primer.
  2. Product Setup

Stir product well before use. Do not dilute. Suitable for brush, low-nap roller, or spray application.

    Method A — Roller/Brush

Use a low-nap roller or long-bristle brush to lay an even, thin coat without pooling.

Method B — Spray (Pro Use)

For large areas, spray apply a uniform film; verify equipment settings with a small test area.

Pro Tip: Mask adjacent finishes—Xpress SP has high grab and low dirt pickup once dry.
  3. Application & Coverage

Apply a single, continuous, thin coat to achieve full, even coverage. Avoid runs or excessive film build.

    Coverage — Non-Porous

On smooth, dense surfaces (metals, glazed tiles, GRC): approx. 1 L / 12 m².

    Coverage — Porous/Irregular

On absorbent/rough areas, coverage may reduce (up to 1 L / m² depending on porosity/texture). Apply only enough to wet the surface uniformly.

Timing: Typical dry-to-overcoat is ~30 minutes @ 23°C, 50% RH. Cooler temps/high RH extend dry time.
Pro Tip: Thin, uniform films deliver the best adhesion—if you can see pooling, you’ve overapplied.
  4. Overcoating

Once dry, overcoat with Gripset self-adhesive sheet or liquid membranes, or compatible coatings/adhesives as specified. Verify bond with a quick pull test on unusual substrates.

Pro Tip: Install finishes soon after drying to minimise surface contamination prior to waterproofing.
  5. Conditions, Clean-up & Storage

Apply between 5°C and 35°C in dry, well-ventilated conditions. Keep substrates dry during application and drying.

    Clean-up

Clean tools with water while wet. Once dried, remove mechanically or with an appropriate solvent.

    Storage

Store sealed at room temperature, off concrete floors, away from freezing and direct sun. Shelf life: up to 24 months (unopened).

Pro Tip: Always verify adhesion on atypical substrates with a small test area before proceeding at scale.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Areas with rising moisture or negative hydrostatic pressure. The product is not designed to counteract these conditions.
  • Not for: Immersed applications. Do not use where continuous submersion will occur.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation is critical for Gripset Xpress SP to achieve its documented adhesion strength, especially on challenging surfaces.

Metal surfaces (e.g., galvanised iron, Colorbond, aluminium, stainless steel)

Surface prep: Surfaces must be structurally sound, dry, and clean. Remove all oils, grease, loose material, and foreign particles. Mechanical removal by abrasive blasting or grinding may be necessary for unsound layers or contaminants.

Primer: Required. Gripset Xpress SP is formulated to enhance adhesion on these smooth, non-porous materials without prior etching.

Glazed and vitrified tiles, natural stone

Surface prep: Ensure surfaces are stable, dry, and free from wax residues, oils, or loose material. Mechanically remove any de-bonded coatings or contaminants. Fill rough surfaces or voids first.

Primer: Required. This primer provides the necessary bond to existing hard, dense, and non-absorbent tiled surfaces.

Concrete (precast, tilt-up, glass-reinforced) & masonry (brickwork, cement sheeting)

Surface prep: Substrates must be sound, smooth, stable, dry, and clean. Point brick/block surfaces flush. Remove all laitance, curing membranes, release agents, algae, or moss. Mechanical methods like blast tracking or grinding are effective for surface contaminant removal.

Primer: Required. Gripset Xpress SP bonds to these dense and often non-absorbent concrete and masonry types, as well as being suitable for porous variants.
