Gripset Xpress SP is an advanced aqueous polymer primer engineered for waterproofing specialists requiring a reliable adhesion bridge on dense, non-porous substrates. It effectively eliminates the need for labor-intensive mechanical grinding or chemical etching on difficult surfaces such as Colorbond, stainless steel, copper, and vitrified tiles.

The solvent-free, Nil-VOC composition ensures compliance with Green Star ratings while providing industrial-strength grip—tested at 0.83MPa on glazed tiles—to prevent catastrophic membrane delamination and bond failure.

This rapid-set primer is designed to fast-track commercial and residential workflows, reaching a tack-free state in just 30 minutes at 23°C for immediate follow-up with liquid or self-adhesive membrane systems. It is not suitable for substrates subject to rising moisture, negative hydrostatic pressure, or continuous water immersion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What surfaces can Gripset Xpress SP be applied to?

It is designed for non-porous and smooth substrates including metals, rigid PVC, glazed ceramics, and natural stone. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants.

How quickly can I overcoat after priming?

Typically within 30 minutes under normal conditions (23°C, 50% RH). Cooler or more humid conditions may extend drying time.

Can I apply Gripset Xpress SP to damp surfaces?

No. The primer should only be applied to dry, non-porous surfaces to ensure optimal adhesion and solvent evaporation.

Is Gripset Xpress SP suitable for submerged conditions?

No. It is not recommended for submerged or negative hydrostatic pressure applications. Use a suitable immersion-rated primer for those cases.

Do I need to abrade smooth surfaces before priming?

Light abrasion of glossy or polished surfaces is recommended to further enhance mechanical adhesion before applying the primer.

Applications & Benefits

Typical Applications

  • Priming non-porous substrates before applying Gripset waterproofing membranes or adhesives.
  • Adhesion promotion on smooth surfaces such as metals, rigid PVC, glazed ceramics, and natural stone.
  • Use in internal or external areas where rapid drying is required to maintain project timelines.
  • Preparation of metal flashings, trims, and fixtures prior to membrane installation.
  • Refurbishment projects where existing tiled or smooth finishes need a bonding key for new systems.

Key Benefits

  • Rapid drying — overcoat in approximately 30 minutes under normal conditions.
  • Solvent-based formula ensures high bond strength to smooth and dense surfaces.
  • Improves adhesion and durability of subsequent membrane and adhesive layers.
  • Single-coat coverage saves application time and labour costs.
  • Compatible with the full range of Gripset waterproofing systems.
  • Suitable for both interior and exterior use.

Applying Gripset Xpress SP: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure substrates are structurally sound, smooth, dry and clean. Remove dust, oils, release/curing agents, laitance, loose coatings and contaminants. Mechanically abrade/deglose glossy areas; repair voids and defects before priming.

    Method A — Mechanical Prep

Grind or abrade dense/smooth surfaces (e.g., glazed tiles, metals) to create a uniform key; vacuum thoroughly.

    Method B — Solvent/Degrease Clean

On metals and rigid plastics, solvent-wipe to remove oils/grease after abrasion. Allow to dry completely before priming.

Timing: Proceed only when the surface is dry and dust-free.
Pro Tip: Point masonry/blockwork flush and patch defects to avoid low spots that trap excess primer.
  2. Product Setup

Stir product well before use. Do not dilute. Suitable for brush, low-nap roller, or spray application.

    Method A — Roller/Brush

Use a low-nap roller or long-bristle brush to lay an even, thin coat without pooling.

Method B — Spray (Pro Use)

For large areas, spray apply a uniform film; verify equipment settings with a small test area.

Pro Tip: Mask adjacent finishes—Xpress SP has high grab and low dirt pickup once dry.
  3. Application & Coverage

Apply a single, continuous, thin coat to achieve full, even coverage. Avoid runs or excessive film build.

    Coverage — Non-Porous

On smooth, dense surfaces (metals, glazed tiles, GRC): approx. 1 L / 12 m².

    Coverage — Porous/Irregular

On absorbent/rough areas, coverage may reduce (up to 1 L / m² depending on porosity/texture). Apply only enough to wet the surface uniformly.

Timing: Typical dry-to-overcoat is ~30 minutes @ 23°C, 50% RH. Cooler temps/high RH extend dry time.
Pro Tip: Thin, uniform films deliver the best adhesion—if you can see pooling, you’ve overapplied.
  4. Overcoating

Once dry, overcoat with Gripset self-adhesive sheet or liquid membranes, or compatible coatings/adhesives as specified. Verify bond with a quick pull test on unusual substrates.

Pro Tip: Install finishes soon after drying to minimise surface contamination prior to waterproofing.
  5. Conditions, Clean-up & Storage

Apply between 5°C and 35°C in dry, well-ventilated conditions. Keep substrates dry during application and drying.

    Clean-up

Clean tools with water while wet. Once dried, remove mechanically or with an appropriate solvent.

    Storage

Store sealed at room temperature, off concrete floors, away from freezing and direct sun. Shelf life: up to 24 months (unopened).

Pro Tip: Always verify adhesion on atypical substrates with a small test area before proceeding at scale.

Limitations & Safety

Limitations

  • Not suitable for submerged applications or areas subject to negative hydrostatic pressure.
  • Do not apply to damp or wet surfaces — substrate must be dry to ensure proper adhesion.
  • Avoid over-application; heavy films may cause delayed drying or adhesion issues.
  • Not recommended for direct application over unstable or friable surfaces.
  • Ensure compatibility with subsequent membrane or adhesive systems before use.
  • Do not use below 5°C or above 35°C ambient/substrate temperature.

Safety & Handling

  • Read and follow all instructions in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) prior to use.
  • Use only in well-ventilated areas; vapours may be harmful.
  • Wear suitable PPE: gloves, eye protection, and appropriate respirator if ventilation is insufficient.
  • Avoid skin and eye contact. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Do not ingest — seek medical attention immediately if swallowed.
  • Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources.

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store in original, sealed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Protect from direct sunlight, heat, and frost.
  • Shelf life: up to 24 months from date of manufacture when unopened and stored as recommended.
  • Dispose of empty containers and unused product in accordance with local regulations.
