For high-adhesion priming on non-porous, dense, and smooth substrates where standard absorbing primers cannot bond, Gripset Xpress SP Primer provides a solvent-free alternative to hazardous solvent-based systems. It is formulated to enable the direct application of Gripset self-adhesive sheet and liquid membrane systems over challenging wall and floor surfaces without the need for chemical etching or grinding.
What it does
Xpress SP Primer creates a high-strength physical key over smooth substrates, achieving mechanical adhesion over glazed ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles, natural stone, and metals without modifying the substrate surface. It dries to a non-tacky, low-dirt-retention finish that prevents contamination before the membrane or adhesive layer is applied. Because the formula has nil VOC content, it meets the requirements of Green Star Rating tools for multi-unit residential, commercial, and healthcare developments.
Numbers that matter
-
30-minute dry time: Fast-drying window at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, allowing rapid progression to the membrane application.
-
0.83 MPa adhesion to glazed tiles: Verified bond strength directly to glazed surfaces, eliminating the need for mechanical etching or chemical profiling.
-
0.8 MPa adhesion to James Hardie Scyon: Reliable structural bond directly to Scyon Secura external and internal flooring systems.
-
1 Litre per 12m² minimum coverage: Direct coverage rate on smooth, non-porous surfaces such as metal, glass reinforced concrete, and glazed tiles. Porous or highly absorbent substrates may require up to 1 Litre per m².
Where to use it
Suitable for commercial, industrial, and residential applications on both walls and floors. Compatible substrates include:
- Metals including galvanised iron, zincalume, aluminium, stainless steel, copper, brass treated steel, and colorbond sheeting.
- Existing ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles, natural stone, and glazed surfaces.
- Precast concrete, tilt-up concrete, and glass reinforced concrete.
- James Hardie Scyon Secura external and internal flooring.
- Hardwood, dense timber surfaces, marine plywood, and timber sheet surfaces.
- Brickwork (clay and concrete), compressed cement sheeting, and plasterboard.
- Polymer mortars, synthetic mortars, and smooth self-levelling compounds.
Limitations
- Do not use as a primer in areas subject to rising moisture or negative hydrostatic pressure.
- Do not use in immersed applications such as pools or water tanks.
Installation and surface preparation
All substrates must be structurally sound, smooth, stable, dry, clean, and free from loose material, de-bonded coatings, curing compounds, release agents, laitance, or grease. Structurally unsound layers must be mechanically removed by grinding, abrasive blasting, or blast tracking.
Stir the primer thoroughly before application. Apply an even coat using a low-nap roller or a long-bristle brush. For spray application parameters, contact Gripset Technical Services. Clean up tools with water while the primer is wet; once dry, the product must be removed mechanically or with a solvent.
