Sealants

Expansion joints, perimeter sealing, wet areas, structural glazing, fire-rated penetrations — this range covers every sealant technology you'll reach for on Australian building sites. Polyurethane sealants for high-movement structural joints, neutral-cure silicones for bathrooms and façades, MS polymer hybrids with primerless adhesion up to ±50% movement, and acrylic sealants for...

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right sealant?
It depends on the job. Silicone suits glass, glazing, and wet areas but cannot be painted. Polyurethane handles high-movement joints and accepts paint. MS polymer gives you both paintability and weathering resistance without primer. Acrylic suits non-movement gaps.
What sealant do I use for a shower or bathroom?
Use a sanitary silicone sealant with fungicide for mould resistance. Sanitary silicone handles the moisture, steam, and cleaning chemicals in wet areas. It is not rated for permanent water immersion or swimming pools.
Can I paint over the sealant after it cures?
Silicone sealants do not accept paint. Polyurethane and MS polymer sealants accept acrylic, oil, and rubber-based paints once cured. Wait at least seven days before painting and test on a small area. Non-flexible paints may crack on moving joints.
What does movement capability mean for sealants?
Movement capability is the percentage a sealant can stretch and compress as the building moves. Standard sealants handle ±25%. High-movement grades reach ±50% or more. Choose a sealant with enough movement rating for the joint width and thermal range.
Do I need to prime before applying sealant?
MS polymer sealants adhere to most substrates without primer. Silicone sealants need a primer on some non-porous surfaces. Polyurethane sealants often need a primer on porous or dusty substrates. Always check the product data sheet for the specific primer requirement.
