For movement and connection joints in concrete and masonry facades, Sikaflex PRO is a one-component, moisture-curing polyurethane sealant. It provides a reliable seal for expansion joints on porous substrates and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor general sealing applications, including potable water systems with AS/NZS 4020:2018 potable-water approval.

How it works

Sikaflex PRO cures upon exposure to atmospheric moisture to form an elastic joint sealant with a movement capability of ±25%. This elasticity allows the cured joint to absorb thermal expansion and structural contraction without losing adhesion to the joint faces. It possesses high tear propagation resistance, preventing minor surface punctures from splitting under tension, and maintains a stable seal across a service temperature range of −40 °C to +70 °C.

Where to use it

Sikaflex PRO adheres without primers to many common building materials. However, for optimum adhesion in critical or highly stressed joint applications, specific pre-treatments apply:

  • Porous substrates: Concrete, aerated concrete, cement-based renders, mortars, and bricks. Prime with Sika Primer-3 N and allow 30 minutes to 8 hours flash-off time.
  • Non-porous metals and glazing: Aluminium, anodised aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel, powder-coated metals, and glazed tiles. Clean and pre-treat with Sika Aktivator-205, allowing 15 minutes to 6 hours flash-off time.
  • Other metals: Copper, brass, and titanium-zinc. Pre-treat with Sika Aktivator-205, then apply Sika Primer-3 N. Allow 30 minutes to 8 hours flash-off.
  • PVC: Clean and pre-treat using Sika Primer-215, allowing 30 minutes to 8 hours flash-off.

Limitations

  • Natural stone: Do not use Sikaflex PRO on natural stone, as staining or migration may occur.
  • Bituminous and rubber substrates: Do not use on bituminous substrates, natural rubber, EPDM rubber, or building materials that bleed oils, plasticisers, or solvents.
  • Water exposure: Do not use in and around swimming pools, for joints under water pressure, or for permanent water immersion.
  • Painting: Non-flexible paint systems may impair sealant elasticity and lead to cracking of the paint film. Test paint compatibility before full application.
  • Colour variations: White and light colours may yellow over time when exposed to UV radiation, chemicals, or high temperatures. This change is purely aesthetic and does not affect technical performance.
  • Cure interference: Do not expose uncured sealant to alcohol-containing products, as they will disrupt the curing reaction.

Application and joint design

Before application, insert a closed-cell, polyethylene foam backing rod to regulate the joint depth. Extrude the sealant into the joint, ensuring full contact with the joint faces to prevent air entrapment. Tool the sealant firmly against the joint sides. If dry-tooled, the sealant cures to a slightly structured, concrete-like finish; wet-tooling with Sika Tooling Agent N produces a smooth surface. Clean uncured tools and equipment immediately with Sika Remover-208; cured material can only be removed mechanically.

  1. Step 1: Joint & Substrate Preparation

    The foundation of a durable seal is a properly prepared substrate. Ensure the surface is structurally sound, clean, and dry.

    Cleaning Porous Substrates (Concrete, Masonry)

    Use a wire brush, grinding, or sandblasting to remove all laitance, dust, and loose material. Remove all contaminants like form-release agents, curing compounds, and old sealant residues.

    Cleaning Non-Porous Substrates (Metals, PVC)

    Clean with a suitable solvent and a clean, lint-free cloth. For metals, light abrasion may be required to remove oxidation. Always perform a final wipe to remove any residues.

    Pro Tip: Use masking tape to protect the joint faces and ensure clean, sharp sealant lines. Apply the tape before priming.
  2. Step 2: Priming & Backing Rod Installation

    For critical applications, priming is essential for optimal adhesion. Backing rods are non-negotiable for controlling sealant depth and preventing three-sided adhesion.

    Primer Application

    Apply the recommended Sika primer or activator in a thin, continuous film using a brush or clean cloth. Avoid ponding or over-application.

    Backing Rod Installation

    Insert a closed-cell polyethylene foam backing rod to the required depth to achieve the correct width-to-depth ratio (typically 2:1). Ensure the rod is compressed by approx. 25% to hold it in place.

    Timing: Allow primers to fully flash off before applying sealant. This is typically 30-60 minutes, but check the primer's specific data sheet. Do not exceed the maximum overcoat time (usually 8 hours).
  3. Step 3: Sealant Application & Tooling

    Proper application and tooling are crucial for a professional finish and long-term performance.

    Application

    Cut the nozzle to the required bead size. Extrude the sealant into the joint from the base, ensuring continuous, uniform application and avoiding any air entrapment.

    Tooling Off

    Firmly tool the sealant against the joint sides and backing rod. Use a spatula or slicker with a suitable tooling agent (e.g., Sika® Tooling Agent N) to create a smooth, concave finish that sheds water.

    Timing: Tooling must be completed within the sealant's tooling time (~150 minutes). Remove masking tape immediately after tooling for the cleanest edges.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Natural stone, as it may cause staining or adhesion issues.
  • Not for: Bituminous substrates, natural rubber, EPDM rubber, or any building materials that might bleed oils, plasticizers, or solvents. These materials can attack the sealant and compromise performance.
  • Not for: Joints in and around swimming pools.
  • Not for: Joints under water pressure or permanent water immersion, as it is not designed for continuous hydrostatic loads.
  • Avoid: Exposure of uncured Sikaflex PRO to alcohol-containing products, as this can interfere with the curing reaction.

First aid

  • Inhaled: Move affected person to fresh air. Consult a physician if symptoms persist.

Store Sikaflex PRO in its original, undamaged, sealed packaging in dry conditions, protected from direct sunlight, at temperatures between +5 °C and +25 °C. Shelf life is 12 months. Dispose of contents and container at an approved waste disposal plant, avoiding release into the environment or waterways.
