Why do corners and junctions fail first?
Movement stress concentrates at corners, changes of plane and penetrations. These are also the spots where workmanship errors show up first. Reinforcing fabric, prefabricated corners and detail tape strengthen these points so the membrane holds as one continuous layer.
What is a waterstop and where is it used?
A strip placed in a concrete joint to block water. Hydrophilic waterstops like BRW, Mapeproof Swell and Pasco Aquastop expand when they contact water and seal the joint. They go at construction joints in below-grade concrete.
Do I need reinforcing fabric under the membrane?
At internal corners, junctions and over cracks or movement joints, yes. Fabric bridges movement so the membrane does not split. The membrane manufacturer tells you where reinforcement is required.
What is a bond breaker and why is it used?
A bond breaker stops the membrane bonding to the back of a joint so it can flex without splitting. Backer rods do this in movement joints. Some detail tapes also work as bond breakers.
How are pipe penetrations waterproofed?
With a prefabricated pipe collar bonded to the membrane around the pipe. Elastoproof base collars and Fatra round open pipe collars are the stocked options. The collar must match the membrane system.
