Adheseal Backing Rod Open Cell is an open cell polyurethane foam backing rod used in expansion joints and as a non-gassing backer rod with caulking and sealant applications. It comes in continuous length rolls dispensed from a binder twine core.

Key Features

  • Medium-density open-cell polyurethane foam
  • Non-gassing, ensuring sealant cures from both sides
  • Suitable for hot-pour sealants including silicone, rubber, and asphalt
  • Temperature range from -60°C to intermittent 260°C
  • Available in diameters up to 50mm
  • Compressible, bendable, and stretchable for various joint sizes
  • Non-toxic, low VOC, meeting "green star" environmental criteria
  • Odourless and non-staining

Suitable Substrates

  • Masonry, Brick, Stone, Porcelain
  • Metal, Aluminium
  • Timber
  • Plastics, Fibreglass
  • Painted surfaces
  • Rubber
  • Powder-coated surfaces
  • Waterproof membranes

Uses

  • Prevents 3-sided sealant adhesion
  • Used behind cold-applied Acrylic, Silicone, PU, MS, SPUR, and Hybrid sealants
  • Supports sealants in expansion joints, window glazing, precast panels, and bridge construction
  • Compatible with hot-pour sealants such as silicone, rubber, and asphalt

Benefits

  • Faster sealant curing due to breathable foam structure
  • Flexible application in a wide range of joint sizes
  • Excellent compressibility and resilience, keeping the rod in place during installation
  • Reduces the risk of sealant failure due to its non-gassing properties
  • Can be installed without concern for surface damage, minimizing the need for repairs
  • Suitable for both internal and external applications

Application Guide

  1. Ensure that sealant-specific application requirements are followed before installing the backer rod.
  2. Use the Backing Rod Insertion Tool to place the rod at the correct depth in the joint.
  3. Compress the open-cell foam by at least 24% during installation to ensure it remains in place.
  4. In cases where joint depth is insufficient for the rod, apply bond breaker tape to prevent 3-sided adhesion.

Limitations

  • Avoid excessive longitudinal stretching during installation
  • Not suitable for applications where sealant is heated above +70°C
  • Not recommended for use in swimming pools due to exposure to chlorine
  • Should not be exposed to direct UV light
