For general glazing and weather sealing in curtain wall installations and building facades, Dowsil 791 Weatherproofing Sealant provides a durable, flexible barrier that accommodates high-movement perimeter and expansion joints. This one-part, non-sag silicone cures at ambient temperature by reacting with atmospheric moisture, forming a resilient rubber seal without requiring a primer on most non-porous surfaces.
How it works
Dowsil 791 is a neutral-cure RTV silicone formulation. Because it does not release corrosive byproducts during cure, it is suitable for direct contact with sensitive building components including coated glass, galvanised steel, and masonry. Once cured, the silicone structure is virtually unaffected by sunlight, rain, snow, or ozone, maintaining its bond and elasticity under direct UV exposure and thermal weathering. The raw sealant has low stringing upon gunning and zero slump, allowing clean application in vertical and overhead joints.
Numbers that matter
-
±50% joint movement capability (ASTM C719): Absorbs significant shear and expansion forces across curtain wall panels and perimeter joints without tearing or losing adhesion.
-
20-minute working time: Provides a practical installation window to gun, tool, and finish the joint before a skin begins to form.
-
-50°C to 150°C service temperature: Maintains its physical flexibility and seal integrity across extreme seasonal thermal cycles.
-
430% elongation at break (ASTM C1135): Allows high stretch capacity under load before physical failure of the cured sealant bead.
-
7 to 14 days cure time (at 25°C and 50% RH): Reaches full deep-section cure and design mechanical properties within this window, depending on joint depth and moisture access.
Where to use it
This sealant is formulated for weatherproofing joints across key structural facade substrates. It forms an unprimed bond to most non-porous surfaces, while certain porous substrates may require a primer for optimal adhesion. Suitable substrates include:
- Coated glass and glazing panels
- Galvanised steel and anodised architectural frames
- Masonry and precast concrete elements
- General porous and non-porous construction materials
Limitations
Dowsil 791 must be used within its performance boundaries to prevent joint failure:
- Do not use as a structural sealant.
- Do not use in below-grade applications or on surfaces continuously immersed in water.
- Do not apply when surface temperatures exceed 50°C.
- Do not apply to frost-laden or wet surfaces, or in totally confined joints where atmospheric moisture cannot reach the sealant to initiate cure.
- Do not use on building materials that bleed oils, plasticisers, or solvents, or on green or partially vulcanised rubber gaskets or tapes.
- Do not use on natural stone unless the specific substrate has passed the ASTM C1248 non-stain test evaluation.
- Do not use on surfaces intended to be painted, as paint typically will not adhere to silicone.
- Do not use in direct contact with food, or in medical or pharmaceutical applications.
Application and joint prep
Before applying Dowsil 791, clean all joint surfaces of foreign matter, grease, oil, dust, water, frost, surface dirt, old sealants, or protective coatings. Install backing material, joint filler, setting blocks, or spacer shims as specified. Mask adjacent areas to ensure neat tooling lines. Apply the sealant in a continuous operation using positive pressure. Tool the sealant with light pressure within 15 minutes of application—before a skin forms—to spread the material firmly against the backing rod and joint faces. Remove masking tape immediately after tooling.
