Meeting stringent fire and acoustic performance standards in critical building joints demands a sealant engineered for the task. Bostik Fireban One delivers up to 4 hours of fire resistance and certified acoustic performance, maintaining compartmentation where it matters most.

Why this product exists

This product was formulated to provide a single, robust solution for movement joints that must also act as fire and acoustic barriers. It's a one-component, intumescent polyurethane designed to expand and seal voids under fire conditions, while also accommodating significant structural movement and dampening sound transmission. Its formulation ensures both long-term flexibility and resistance to common environmental stressors.

The numbers that matter

  • Up to 4 hours fire resistance, certified to AS 1530.4-2014 and AS 4072.1-2005, ensures crucial compartmentation in fire-rated assemblies.
  • With ±25% movement capability, a 10mm joint can flex 2.5mm in either direction, accommodating structural shifts without compromise.
  • An elongation at break of over 900% provides a substantial safety margin for extreme joint expansion beyond its rated movement.
  • A cure rate of 2mm per 24 hours (on porous substrates) means a 10mm deep joint will achieve full strength in approximately 7 days, reducing downtime on site.

What it's like to use

As a one-component sealant, Bostik Fireban One requires no mixing, simplifying application. It applies smoothly as a non-sag thixotropic paste, ideal for overhead and vertical joints. Apply between 5°C and 35°C. For optimal performance, always prime porous substrates with Bostik N49 Primer or non-porous concrete with Bostik Ultraseal. For metals and plastics, use Bostik N40 Primer. Tool the sealant to a concave shape immediately after application to ensure maximum contact and proper joint geometry, using a compatible backing rod. Uncured material and equipment can be cleaned immediately with Bostik Handy Wipe towels.

Where this product excels

  • Civil Construction & Precast: Sealing movement joints in insitu concrete floors and walls, precast, and tilt-up panels, where fire and acoustic ratings are non-negotiable.
  • Masonry & Blockwork: Providing a certified fire and acoustic seal for joints within brickwork, blockwork, and rendered masonry structures.
  • Interior Fit-out & Partition Systems: Ensuring compliance for fire-rated and acoustic-rated plasterboard and fibre cement sheet systems in walls and ceilings.

How it fits in a real system

Bostik Fireban One typically serves as the primary sealant in fire-rated joint sealant systems. It’s applied after surface preparation and priming, defining the fire and acoustic barrier within the movement joint, as a critical component of the overall compartmentation strategy.

Choose this when

  • When demanding fire resistance up to 4 hours is required for movement joints.
  • When acoustic performance is critical for sound transmission control between compartments.
  • When working with concrete, masonry, plasterboard, or fibre cement sheet where certified fire and acoustic ratings are mandated.
  • When a durable, flexible, one-component polyurethane sealant is needed for both interior and exterior exposure (weathering conditions).

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Use in chlorinated water, such as swimming pools or spas, due to chemical incompatibility.
  • Not for: Glazing applications; a different sealant chemistry is required for structural or weather glazing.
  • Not for: Application to cement-based substrates less than 28 days old, as uncured cement can compromise adhesion.
  • Not for: Constant immersion in salt water, which can degrade sealant performance over time.
  • Not for: Joints narrower than 6mm or in trafficable joints exceeding 10mm in width.

This product is tested and certified to Australian Standards AS 1530.4-2014 and AS 4072.1-2005 for fire resistance, providing assurance of its performance in critical fire-rated assemblies. It also meets AS1157-1972 for resistance to fungal growth, contributing to long-term durability in various conditions.

Consider this against other sealants

Bostik Fireban One is engineered for critical applications requiring certified fire and acoustic ratings. For general-purpose sealing needs that do not demand these specific performance criteria, or where limitations such as use in chlorinated water or glazing are present, other general-purpose sealants should be considered. For external weatherseals without fire rating, consider alternatives like Bostik Seal 'N' Flex FC. For acoustic joint sealing without fire rating, Everflex Fire Fill may be a more suitable option.

Frequently asked questions

Where can Bostik Fireban One be used?

Bostik Fireban One is suitable for sealing joints in fire-rated and acoustic-rated construction. It is specified for insitu concrete, precast and tilt-up panels, brickwork, blockwork, rendered masonry, plasterboard, and fibre cement sheets.

What fire and acoustic ratings does Fireban One achieve?

Bostik Fireban One is fire-rated up to 4 hours, certified to AS 1530.4-2014 and AS 4072.1-2005. It also provides acoustic sealing performance, which is critical for compliant fire and sound-rated systems.

Can I use Fireban One in trafficable joints?

Bostik Fireban One is not recommended for trafficable joints wider than 10mm. While it handles joint movement up to 50% (± 25%), wider trafficable joints require a product specifically designed for higher mechanical loads.

When can I paint over Fireban One?

Bostik Fireban One can be painted after a minimum of 7 days of cure time. A field test is recommended to confirm compatibility, as some solvent-based paints may affect the sealant's surface or cause discolouration.

Store in a cool (5°C to 30°C), dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, oxidising agents, and acids. Keep containers tightly closed. Shelf life is 12 months in the original unopened container. Empty foils may be disposed of via local landfill. Absorb spills with sand or earth, collect in a properly labelled metal container, and dispose of according to local regulations. Do not dispose of down drains or into waterways.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation and priming are essential to ensure the documented performance of Bostik Fireban One.

Porous substrates (e.g., concrete, brickwork, blockwork, rendered masonry)

Surface prep: Clean and dry all surfaces. Remove contaminants like laitance, oil, dust, grease, and old sealants. Vacuum clean dust and loose particles.

Primer: Optional. For maximum performance, especially in periodically immersed or submerged applications, use Bostik N49 Primer. For porous substrates not subject to immersion, priming is not required if the surface is clean, dry, and uncontaminated. Do not use methylated spirits or turps.

Non-porous substrates (e.g., burnished concrete, plastic, metal)

Surface prep: Clean and dry all surfaces. Remove contaminants like oil, grease, and any protective coatings.

Primer: Required. For non-porous or burnished concrete, use Bostik Ultraseal. For plastic and metallic non-porous substrates (such as UPVC, brass, copper, stainless steel), use Bostik N40 Primer with the two-cloth method.
