When your project demands a reliable, fast-setting seal for glass, aluminium, or general sheet metal work, you need a sealant that performs. SA Contractors Silicone delivers a rapid-curing, flexible bond that withstands the elements. It skins quickly, allowing for efficient tooling and ensuring your general glazing and sealing jobs are finished right, the first time.

Why this product exists

This is a one-part, 100% acetic cure silicone adhesive/sealant designed for general-purpose glazing and sealing applications. Its formulation focuses on long-term reliability where exposure to weather and UV is constant. Unlike slower-curing alternatives, its acetic cure provides rapid skin time, making it efficient on-site. The sealant retains its superior physical properties even after years of high and low temperature exposure, preventing premature seal failure and costly callbacks.

The numbers that matter

  • Dynamic Joint Movement: ±25% means this sealant accommodates typical building movement and thermal expansion without stressing the bond. This flexibility prevents cracking and maintains weather integrity.
  • Skin Time: 5-10 minutes @25°C/50% RH provides a crucial window for tooling the bead to a smooth, professional finish before it starts to skin. This fast action improves job site efficiency.
  • Tensile Strength: 1.7 MPa indicates a strong, cohesive bond within the sealant itself, crucial for maintaining adhesion on compatible substrates even under stress.
  • Operating Temperature: -62°C to 180°C ensures the sealant performs reliably in extreme Australian climates, from freezing conditions to intense summer heat, without degradation.

What it's like to use

Prepare surfaces by ensuring they are clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, oil, rust, and water. Use white spirits or mechanical cleaning with a lint-free cloth; avoid soap or detergent. Once surfaces are clean, cut the nozzle to the desired bead width at a 45-degree angle. Apply the sealant with a gun and tool it immediately, ideally within the 5-10 minute skin time. For a clean finish, use masking tape and remove it before the sealant skins. Uncured sealant cleans up readily with mineral turpentine.

For joints, follow the 'half-width, half-depth' rule: joint depth should be half the width, with a maximum depth of 10mm. Ensure joint width is no less than 4mm. Use a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod to control depth and prevent three-sided adhesion, which is crucial for achieving the ±25% movement capability. If the joint is too shallow for a backer rod, use a polyethylene tape bond breaker.

Where this product excels

  • Glazing Systems: Use for standard glazing of frames, panels, and shop fronts on glass, ceramics, and aluminium. Its rapid cure and excellent adhesion ensure efficient installation and long-term weatherproofing.
  • Sheet Metal Construction: Ideal for sealing sheet metal, skylights, ventilators, and air-conditioning units. The robust weatherability and temperature resistance ensure seals remain intact through harsh conditions.
  • Refrigerated Environments: Securely seal environmental and refrigerated rooms. The wide operating temperature range and resistance to elements maintain thermal integrity.
  • Signage and General Assembly: Provides strong adhesion for assembling metal and plastic signs. Its non-slump properties make it suitable for vertical and overhead applications.

Choose this when

  • When you need a fast-curing general-purpose sealant for glazing: Its acetic cure provides rapid skinning, speeding up project completion.
  • When sealing glass, aluminium, ceramics, or many plastics: Excellent adhesion to these common construction substrates makes it versatile.
  • When long-term weatherability and UV resistance are critical: The sealant retains its flexibility and integrity under prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • When working in environments with extreme temperature fluctuations: Its wide operating temperature range ensures performance from -62°C to 180°C.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Substrates sensitive to acetic acid outgassing, such as concrete, marble, galvanised steel, or lead surfaces. The acidic by-product during cure can cause discolouration or corrosion.
  • Not for: Applications requiring painting. This silicone sealant cannot be painted over, as paint will not adhere reliably to its surface.
  • Not for: Continuously submerged joints where porous substrates might allow water access to the bond interface.
  • Not for: Aquarium manufacturing, or fixing mirrors without prior manufacturer approval, due to specific adhesion requirements and potential for bond degradation.
  • Not for: Certain laminated glass or rubber products where plasticiser bleeding may occur. Always conduct a compatibility test first.

This product is 5 Star VOC Compliant, indicating it meets stringent standards for volatile organic compound emissions, contributing to better indoor air quality on your projects.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use SA Contractors Silicone on concrete or marble?

No, SA Contractors Silicone is not recommended for use with concrete or marble. Its acetic cure chemistry can react with these and other sensitive substrates, potentially causing staining or adhesion issues. Refer to the product limitations for suitable applications.

How quickly does this silicone skin over and fully cure?

SA Contractors Silicone skins in 5-10 minutes at 25°C and 50% relative humidity. Full cure for a 10mm deep joint takes 5-7 days under the same conditions. This allows for prompt tooling and quick initial protection.

Is SA Contractors Silicone paintable?

No, this silicone sealant cannot be painted. Paint will not adhere correctly to the cured silicone surface. If a paintable finish is required, an alternative sealant product should be chosen.

What is the recommended joint design for this silicone?

Joint width and depth should be no less than 4mm. Maximum joint width should not exceed 25mm, with joint depths being half the width and a maximum of 10mm. Use a closed-cell polyethylene foam rod for backing or polyethylene tape as a bond breaker to control depth.
