What is tanking before tiling?
Tanking forms and details the waterproof layer before you tile a wet area. It covers liquid, sheet and cementitious membranes, plus the tape, banding and shower hob that seal the system.
When is under-tile waterproofing required?
Use an approved waterproofing system where the project design, building code or wet-area specification calls for it. Tile and grout alone will not stop water getting behind the tiles.
Why use tape and banding with a membrane?
Tape and banding seal the corners, junctions and changes of plane where the membrane meets another surface. Use the components the membrane maker names as compatible, in the right sequence.
Do I tile directly over a wet membrane?
No. Let the membrane cure for the time its technical data sheet states before you put tile adhesive on it. Tiling too soon can break the waterproof bond.
Is a shower hob part of the waterproofing system?
Yes. The hob is part of the waterproofing system where the shower design needs one. Install and detail it with the membrane before you tile, not as a separate step.
