Everflex Primer WBP

Everflex Primer WBP locks Adheseal water-based membranes to porous internal substrates, bedding down dust and stabilising the surface so the bond actually holds. One coat covers 4 m² per litre, dries in 4 to 24 hours, and meets Green Star VOC criteria, so it won't stink out the job. Apply between 5°C and 35°C with a brush, roller, broom, or spray. If the substrate is particularly porous or friable, hit it with a second coat before the membrane goes on.

Everflex WBP Primer seals porous substrates to provide a stable foundation for tile adhesives, floor levelling compounds, and waterproofing membranes. It penetrates concrete, masonry, and cement sheeting to improve adhesion and prevent air release from the substrate into subsequent layers.

Where to use it

  • For use over porous substrates.
  • Internal & External walls & floors.
  • Primer for Everflex Waterproofing Membranes.
  • Compatible with cement-based ceramic tile adhesives and grouts.
  • Primer for Self-levelling compounds.

Benefits

  • Fast drying.
  • Suitable for Porous substrates.
  • Primer for Waterproof membranes, Self-levelling compounds, Tile adhesives and Grouts.
  • Non-corrosive.
  • Suitable for internal & external applications.

Compatible substrates

  • Concrete after a curing period of 28 days.
  • 3:1 sand cement screed or C-Bed.
  • Masonry/render after curing period of at least 4 days.
  • Medium density fibre-cement & compressed fibre-cement sheet.
  • Cement sheeting / underlay / external weatherboard / blue board.
  • Jointing compound over plasterboard.
  • Pre-cast concrete, once the release agent has been removed/ dissipated.
  • Wet area plasterboard / Villaboard.

Where not to use it

  • Do not apply when temperatures are below 10 °C or above 35 °C.
  • Limited UV resistance (not designed for long-term UV exposure and must be overcoated).
  • Do not apply on damp, wet or contaminated substrates, if it is raining or if rain is imminent.
  • Not suitable for areas subject to hydrostatic pressure or rising damp, Everflex VBS is recommended.
  • Foot traffic.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use Primer WBP?

Use Primer WBP to prime porous substrates, such as concrete, before applying Adheseal water-based membranes. It ensures strong adhesion by bedding down dust and improving the surface bond.

Can I use Primer WBP on non-porous surfaces or for direct tile adhesion?

No, Primer WBP is specifically formulated for porous surfaces and should not be used on metal, glazed tiles, marble, terrazzo, or shiny concrete. Do not direct stick tiles to this primer, as it is designed for waterproofing membranes, not tile adhesive.

What are the VOC characteristics of Primer WBP?

Primer WBP has very low VOCs, ensuring a safer application environment and meeting 'Green Star' environmental criteria. This helps achieve compliance on projects requiring specific environmental standards.

How long does Primer WBP need to dry before applying a waterproofing membrane?

Allow Primer WBP to dry for 4 to 24 hours before applying the waterproofing membrane. The exact drying time depends on surface porosity, temperature, humidity, and ventilation on site.

Applications and benefits

Where Primer WBP is used, what it delivers, and who uses it
Application Key benefit Primary trades
Priming porous concrete for water-based waterproofing membranes Ensures superior adhesion of membranes to concrete, preventing delamination and callbacks. Beds down surface dust effectively. Waterproofers, Builders
Internal applications requiring low VOCs or Green Star compliance Meets 'Green Star' environmental criteria with very low VOCs, simplifying project specification and handover. Specifiers, Architects, Builders
Economical and reliable substrate preparation Provides a cost-effective, single-pack solution for critical adhesion, reducing material and labour overheads. All trades focused on project efficiency

How to Apply Everflex WBP: Step-by-Step

  1. 1. Prepare the Surface

Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, curing agents, or laitance. Vacuum or sweep thoroughly.

  2. 2. Mix if Settled

If separation has occurred, stir gently with a clean paddle. Do not shake vigorously to avoid air entrapment.

  3. 3. Apply Primer

Apply a uniform coat using brush, roller, or low-pressure spray. Ensure full coverage without ponding.

  4. 4. Allow to Dry

Allow primer to dry for approximately 30 minutes at 25°C. Surface must be tack-free before overcoating.

  5. 5. Apply Waterproofing Membrane

Once dry, apply Adheseal waterproofing membrane as per technical instructions. Do not leave WBP exposed for extended periods.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Metal, non-porous surfaces, shiny or very smooth concrete, glazed tiles, marble, terrazzo, particle board, or chipboard. This primer is designed for porous surfaces only.
  • Tile adhesion: Do not direct stick tiles to this primer. It is intended to prepare surfaces for water-based membranes, not as a tile adhesive base.

Safety and handling

Warning: This material is hazardous according to Safe Work Australia criteria.

Personal protective equipment

Wear overalls, Nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and a suitable respirator. Ensure adequate ventilation. If an inhalation risk exists, use an organic vapour/particulate respirator conforming to AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716.

Ventilation

Ensure ventilation is adequate to maintain air concentrations below exposure standards. Use in well-ventilated areas or with local exhaust ventilation.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
  • Skin contact: Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing. Seek medical attention if irritation, swelling, or blisters occur.
  • Eye contact: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do, and continue rinsing. Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth. Call for medical help immediately.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry place between 5°C and 35°C. This material is a Scheduled Poison Schedule 5 (Caution) and must be stored, maintained, and used in accordance with relevant regulations. Clean wet product with water; dry product requires mechanical removal. Avoid release into waterways.

Substrate guide

Proper substrate preparation is critical for adhesion and system integrity. This guide details requirements for using Primer WBP.

Porous concrete and screeds

Surface prep: Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and sound, free from dust, grease, oils, and other contaminants. For friable or significantly dusty surfaces, a second coat of Primer WBP may be necessary to consolidate the surface.

Primer: Required. Primer WBP penetrates and beds down dust, enhancing the adhesion of Adheseal water-based membranes.
