Achieve superior, reliable adhesion for your Adheseal water-based membranes and coatings on internal porous substrates. Everflex Primer WBP ensures the bond lasts, preventing costly membrane delamination and system failures in critical wet areas. Get the preparation right the first time.

Why this product exists

Everflex Primer WBP is a water-based, concrete-compatible polymer emulsion formulated to prepare porous internal substrates for Adheseal water-based membranes and coatings. It penetrates the surface, bedding down dust and stabilising the substrate, which is crucial for creating a strong, lasting bond for the subsequent waterproofing layer. This ensures the entire system performs as specified.

We formulated Everflex Primer WBP with very low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), meeting the stringent 'Green Star' environmental criteria. This makes it a compliant choice for projects where environmental responsibility is a priority, without compromising on adhesion performance.

The numbers that matter

  • Coverage: 4 m² per litre (typical): This allows for economical application. A single coat is often sufficient, ensuring efficiency on site. For highly porous or dusty surfaces, apply a second coat to ensure complete substrate saturation.
  • Drying time: 4 to 24 hours: This fast drying window reduces project downtime. Apply your water-based membrane once the primer is fully dry, but before the surface becomes contaminated, maintaining an uncontaminated bond.
  • Application temperature: 5°C to 35°C: This broad working temperature range accommodates most Australian internal site conditions, allowing for flexible project scheduling.

What it's like to use

Applying Everflex Primer WBP is straightforward. Ensure your substrate is clean, dry, and sound. Use a brush, broom, roller, or spray for application. Aim for one good coat. If the surface is particularly porous or friable, apply a second coat to ensure adequate penetration and dust suppression. Clean tools with water while the product is still wet. Once dried, mechanical cleaning is necessary.

Where this product excels

Everflex Primer WBP is specifically engineered for internal applications where water-based membranes are critical. It excels in:

  • Wet areas: bathrooms, showers, laundries, and kitchens: Priming concrete slabs, cement renders, and fibre cement sheeting before the application of a waterproofing membrane.
  • Stabilising dusty concrete and screeds: Ensuring a stable, dust-free surface for optimal adhesion of subsequent coatings or membranes.
  • Green Star compliant projects: Its very low VOC formulation makes it suitable for environmentally certified building projects.

How it fits in a real system

In typical wet area waterproofing systems, Everflex Primer WBP is the foundational first step after surface preparation. It is applied directly to the porous substrate, such as concrete or fibre cement sheet, before the application of the main Adheseal water-based membrane like Everflex WPM or Everflex Aqua-Ban. This sequence ensures the membrane bonds effectively to the prepared surface. After the membrane is applied, you proceed with tile adhesive and then complete the system with a sanitary silicone sealant like Adheseal S100.

Choose this when

  • When you need to prime porous internal substrates like concrete or cement sheeting.
  • When your subsequent application is an Adheseal water-based membrane or coating.
  • When Green Star compliance or very low VOCs are a project requirement.
  • When bedding down dust and improving adhesion on friable or dusty concrete surfaces.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Metal surfaces or non-porous substrates.
  • Not for: Shiny, very smooth concrete, glazed tiles, marble, or terrazzo.
  • Not for: Particle board or chipboard substrates.
  • Not for: Direct tiling. This primer is designed to be under a membrane, not an adhesive bond for tiles.
  • Not for: External applications.
  • Not for: Use with non-water-based membranes or coatings.

Everflex Primer WBP adheres to Green Star environmental criteria, featuring very low VOC content. This compliance ensures your project can meet sustainability targets while delivering robust performance.

Choosing the right primer: Everflex Primer WBP vs. Everflex Multi-Prime

Everflex Primer WBP is specifically engineered for priming porous internal surfaces, such as concrete and cementitious boards, intended for use with Adheseal water-based membranes and coatings. It excels in wet areas like bathrooms and laundries where consistent adhesion to porous substrates is paramount.

In contrast, if your project involves a wider range of substrates, including some non-porous types, or requires external application versatility with a different range of membranes, consider Everflex Multi-Prime Waterproofing Membrane. Multi-Prime offers a broader compatibility profile, making it suitable when Everflex Primer WBP’s specific internal, porous-surface focus doesn't align with all your project's requirements.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use Primer WBP?

Use Primer WBP to prime porous substrates, such as concrete, before applying Adheseal water-based membranes. It ensures strong adhesion by bedding down dust and improving the surface bond.

Can I use Primer WBP on non-porous surfaces or for direct tile adhesion?

No, Primer WBP is specifically formulated for porous surfaces and should not be used on metal, glazed tiles, marble, terrazzo, or shiny concrete. Do not direct stick tiles to this primer, as it is designed for waterproofing membranes, not tile adhesive.

What are the VOC characteristics of Primer WBP?

Primer WBP has very low VOCs, ensuring a safer application environment and meeting 'Green Star' environmental criteria. This helps achieve compliance on projects requiring specific environmental standards.

How long does Primer WBP need to dry before applying a waterproofing membrane?

Allow Primer WBP to dry for 4 to 24 hours before applying the waterproofing membrane. The exact drying time depends on surface porosity, temperature, humidity, and ventilation on site.
