When tiling over gypsum plaster, pre-cast gypsum panels, or anhydrite screeds, Primer G prevents the chemical reaction between substrate sulphates and cementitious adhesives. By isolating these incompatible materials, it stops the formation of ettringite crystals, which otherwise cause the tile adhesive or smoothing compound to de-bond and separate from the floor or wall.
How it works
Primer G is a water-dispersion synthetic resin primer that dries to form a flexible, compact, shiny coating that consolidates the substrate surface. It regulates water absorption across uneven porous substrates, including cementitious renders, chipboard, cement fibre boards, and foamed concrete.
When used under self-levelling compounds, this absorption control reduces the formation of pinholes and air bubbles while preventing the levelling pour from drying out too fast. When applying sprayable gypsum plasters, it slows water loss into the backing wall to prolong the workability window and help prevent shrinkage cracks.
Numbers that matter
-
30-minute concrete drying time: Minimum wait window at +23°C and 50% relative humidity before applying smoothing compounds or adhesives over cementitious substrates.
-
30 to 60-minute gypsum drying time: Required cure window on gypsum-based substrates before tile installation or levelling application.
-
0.08 to 0.15 kg/m² consumption rate: Normal coverage window, varying based on the porosity and absorption of the substrate material.
-
0 g/l VOC content: Formulated to meet the EC1 Plus standard for very low emissions (under GEV EMICODE testing criteria), making it suitable for closed, unventilated indoor environments.
Where to use it
Primer G is suitable for preparing internal walls and floors prior to subsequent installations:
- Treating gypsum plasters, sprayed gypsum, pre-cast gypsum panels, and fibrous-gypsum panels before installing ceramic tiles with cementitious adhesives.
- On anhydrite screeds before trowelling down cement-based adhesives or levelling compounds.
- Between layers of self-levelling or thixotropic smoothing compounds once the first coat is completely dry.
- On cementitious renders before applying gypsum-based smoothing compounds or plasters.
- On gypsum walls as a fixative for wallpaper adhesives, reducing substrate absorption to simplify future wallpaper removal.
Limitations
- Do not use for external applications.
- Do not apply where rising damp is present.
- Primer G does not waterproof gypsum substrates; it only reduces surface porosity and absorption.
- Do not apply onto magnesium substrates.
- Do not apply the product in a quantity that allows it to pool or form a thick surface film; dilute with clean water as appropriate for the absorption of the substrate.
Application and dilution
The substrate must be clean, dry, and free from oils, grease, residual paint, and loose material. Repair cracks in concrete beforehand with Eporip or Epojet. Sandpaper anhydrite screeds before application. Dilute and apply as follows:
-
Ceramic tiles on gypsum: Use neat (undiluted). Stir just before use and spread uniformly with a flat brush, roller, or spray. If the gypsum is particularly smooth and glossy, abrade the surface before priming.
-
Anchoring coat for gypsum plasters: Dilute Primer G 1:2 with water. Apply sprayable plaster as soon as the primer is dry.
-
Under self-levelling compounds on cementitious substrates: Dilute 1:1 with water and apply by brush, roller, or spray.
-
Under self-levelling compounds on gypsum-based substrates: Use neat (undiluted).
-
Between smoothing layers: Dilute 1:1 with water.
-
Under wallpaper adhesives: Dilute 1:3 with water.
