RLA Zinc Primer is a one-pack, zinc-rich epoxy primer with sacrificial zinc pigment for long-term protection of external steel surfaces against rust and corrosion. It can be used as a finished coat or top coated with suitable decorative finishes.

What it does

RLA Zinc Primer provides a highly durable, matte grey protective finish with outstanding adhesion properties. Its dry film contains 85% zinc and is suitable for harsh environments and severe corrosion-inducing conditions. Uses include roofs, handrails and balustrading, gates, wrought iron, welding touch-ups, and touch-ups to galvanised iron and Zincalume.

Numbers that matter

  • Zinc content: 85% of dry film.
  • Standalone protective coating: Apply 2–4 coats to form a total dry film thickness of 75 microns, with a coverage rate of 1 litre per 5.5 m².
  • For decorative top coating: Apply a minimum of 2 coats at a total dry film thickness of 25 microns, with a coverage rate of 1 litre per 16.5 m².
  • Dry times: Touch dry in 30 minutes at 23°C and 50% RH, recoat after 4 hours and top coat after 24 hours. Drying times may vary with ambient and surface temperatures and humidity.
  • Application temperature: Do not apply when ambient temperatures are above 30°C or below 10°C.

Prepare and apply

Surfaces should be free of rust, scale, dirt, dust, oils, grease, existing coatings and loose particles. Remove rust by grinding, sanding, grit blasting or wire brushing, treat remaining rust with a suitable deoxidiser or chemical rust remover, and clean the surface with a solvent degreaser.

Stir well before use. Apply directly to the bare, prepared metal surface by brush, roller or spray, ensuring full coverage. For brush and roller application, use the product neat. For spray application, it can be thinned 30–40% with mineral turps and applied with a conventional spray gun at 350–400 kPa. After thinning, occasionally shake the spray-gun contents to reincorporate settled zinc pigments.

Important limitations

  • Do not apply over rust converters or any other coating.
  • Do not apply when ambient temperatures are above 30°C or below 10°C.
  • Do not apply when rain is imminent or forecast within 24 hours of application.
  • Apply in a well-ventilated area until the product has fully dried.
