When a critical machine or precast element needs support, but project timelines demand immediate return to service, downtime is not an option. RLA Penatech HES Grout delivers the high early strength and reliable, non-shrink support required to get heavy plant and structures back online quickly, without risking long-term stability.

Why this product exists

RLA Penatech HES Grout is engineered for situations demanding structural integrity under dynamic loads and minimal interruption to operations. It is a Class C cementitious grout, specifically formulated for high early strength gain, exceptional flow characteristics, and dual-stage shrinkage compensation. This ensures a complete fill, critical for load transfer, while preventing future structural issues from grout contraction in both plastic and hardened states.

The numbers that matter

  • >60 MPa compressive strength at 24 hours (Flow consistency): This means heavy machinery and structural components can be reinstated and bear significant loads within one day. The rapid strength development minimises costly operational downtime, a critical factor for industrial and civil projects.
  • Dual-stage expansion (1-2% in plastic state, 0% bleed): Shrinkage is a common failure point for grouts. This controlled expansion actively compensates for it, ensuring a full bond to base plates and anchoring bolts. Coupled with zero bleed, it guarantees a dense, void-free contact area for consistent load distribution.
  • Grouting from 10mm to 120mm in a single pour: This broad application thickness simplifies large-volume pours under base plates and through bolt holes, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial and civil grouting tasks without requiring multiple layers or specialised techniques.
  • >85 MPa ultimate compressive strength (Flow consistency): The long-term strength exceeds the demands of most heavy-duty applications, providing durable and reliable support for machine bases, bridge bearings, and crane rails for the lifespan of the structure.

What it's like to use

This grout requires only the addition of clean water and mechanical mixing for a smooth, flowable consistency. It must be placed within 10 minutes of mixing to fully benefit from its expansion properties. For larger or thicker sections beyond 120mm, it can be extended with well-graded, silt-free aggregate like RLA EPILOX FILLERS F4, ensuring minimal heat build-up. Proper surface preparation, including pre-soaking of the foundation, is crucial, as is continuous pouring from one side to eliminate air voids. After placement, exposed areas need thorough curing with an RLA liquid curing membrane, continuous water, or wet hessian to achieve optimal performance.

Where this product excels

  • Grouting heavy-duty machine base plates: For critical equipment that cannot sustain extended downtime, its high early strength and shrinkage compensation provide rapid, stable support against dynamic operational loads.
  • Rapid reinstatement of precast elements: Accelerates construction schedules for precast concrete components, allowing for quicker removal of bracing and faster follow-on trades due to its fast strength gain.
  • Anchoring bolt holes in structural applications: The exceptional flow characteristics ensure complete filling of bolt holes, forming a high-strength, void-free bond essential for securing structural steel and other heavy fixings.
  • Bridge bearing pads and crane rail plates: Provides superior load-bearing capacity and resistance to impact and vibration, ensuring the long-term durability and safety of vital infrastructure.

Choose this when

  • When high early strength is critical for rapid return to service of equipment or structures.
  • For grouting heavy machinery, bridge bearing pads, or crane rails that require robust support against dynamic loads and vibrations.
  • When specifying a Class C grout that provides dual-stage shrinkage compensation for long-term stability.
  • For applications requiring exceptional flow characteristics to ensure complete fill in tight or complex spaces.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Sub-10mm repairs; this grout is designed for thicknesses from 10mm up to 120mm in a single pour.
  • Not for: Mixing with colloidal mixers; mechanical or high-shear vane mixers are required for proper activation and consistency.
  • Not for: Applications where a pre-mixed liquid requiring no water is specified; this is a powder requiring on-site water addition.
  • Not for: Ignoring temperature guidelines; cold temperatures require warm mixing water and extended formwork, while hot conditions necessitate cool water and storage.

RLA Penatech HES Grout complies with AS1012 for methods of testing concrete and AS1478 for chemical admixtures for concrete, confirming its classification as a Class C grout. This compliance assures specifiers of its robust performance and suitability for structural grouting applications under Australian standards.

Frequently asked questions

Can RLA Penatech HES Grout be used for heavy machinery base plates?

Yes, RLA Penatech HES Grout is specifically designed for heavy duty support grouting, including high-load machine base plates. Its high early and ultimate compressive strengths, reaching over 60 MPa at 24 hours (flow consistency), ensure rapid load bearing and minimal equipment downtime.

What are the temperature limits for applying RLA Penatech HES Grout?

The application temperature range is between 5°C and 30°C. For temperatures below 10°C, warm mixing water (30-40°C) is recommended, and formwork should remain for at least 36 hours. Above 35°C, use cool mixing water (below 20°C) and keep bags out of direct sun.

Is RLA Penatech HES Grout compliant with Australian Standards?

Yes, it has been tested to and complies with AS1012 and AS1478 for Class C grout. This provides assurance for use in specified cementitious grouting applications requiring high early strength.

How quickly can equipment be reinstated after grouting with Penatech HES?

Equipment and machinery can typically be reinstated after 24 hours. The grout develops over 60 MPa compressive strength (flow consistency) within this timeframe, significantly minimising downtime on site.

Can RLA Penatech HES Grout be used for very thick section pours?

It can be placed up to 120mm in a single pour as an under-plate grout. For thicker sections, well-graded, silt-free aggregate such as EPILOX FILLERS F4 must be added at 10kg per 20kg bag to minimise heat build-up. Adding excess aggregate will affect water demand and ultimate strength.

Applying Penatech HES Grout: Professional Protocols

  1. Surface & Formwork Preparation

Ensure the foundation is sound, clean, and free of contaminants. Pre-soak the concrete for several hours, then remove all standing water. Construct leak-proof formwork around the base plate, ensuring it is braced to withstand the grout pressure.

    Formwork Gaps

Generally, allow a gap of 150mm on the pouring side and 50mm on the opposite side to maintain a fluid head.

Pro Tip: For a leak-proof seal, use foam rubber strips or a mastic sealant under the formwork and between joints. This prevents grout loss and ensures correct pressure is maintained during the pour.
  2. Mixing

Use a mechanically powered grout mixer or a slow-speed drill with a high-shear paddle. Do not use a colloidal mixer. Accurately measure the required clean water into the mixer first.

    Adding Powder

Slowly add the entire 20kg bag of Penatech HES Grout to the water while continuously mixing. Mix for a full 5 minutes until a smooth, even, and lump-free consistency is achieved.

Water Content: For Flowable: 2.5-2.8 litres per 20kg bag. For Fluid: 3.2-3.5 litres per 20kg bag. Do not add excess water.
  3. Placing & Curing

Continuous grout flow is essential. Ensure sufficient material is mixed and ready before starting the pour. Pour from one side of the void only to eliminate air entrapment.

Placement Time: At 20°C, place the grout within 10 minutes of mixing to gain the full benefit of the expansion process.
Pro Tip: Proper curing is vital for achieving the specified ultimate strength. As soon as the grout has hardened, cure all exposed areas using an RLA liquid curing membrane or by keeping them continuously wet with damp hessian.

Product limitations

  • Low temperature working: Below 10°C ambient, formwork must remain in place for at least 36 hours. Below 5°C, use warm mixing water (30-40°C) to accelerate strength development.
  • High temperature working: Above 35°C ambient, use cool mixing water (below 20°C). Store product bags undercover and as cool as possible before use.
  • Maximum pour thickness (unfilled): Do not exceed 120mm in a single pour without adding aggregate. For thicker sections, add appropriate aggregate.
  • Aggregate addition: Do not add excess aggregate, as this will negatively affect water demand and ultimate strength gain. Consult manufacturer for guidance.
  • Curing: All exposed areas must be thoroughly cured using an RLA liquid curing membrane, continuous water, or wet hessian to achieve ultimate performance.
