When the project timeline is tight, but the substrate isn't settled, ARDEX X56 delivers confidence. This fast-setting, highly flexible tile adhesive is purpose-built for rapid tiling over dynamic substrates. It handles the movement of early age concrete, renders, screeds, and internal sheet timber. Get tiling done, and grout in just 4 hours.

Why this product exists

ARDEX X56 is a polymer-modified, highly flexible adhesive engineered for rapid project completion without compromising bond integrity. It allows tilers to work efficiently over substrates still undergoing movement, such as concrete curing for only 7 days, or renders and screeds after 16 hours. Its inherent flexibility eliminates the need for additional additives, simplifying the mix and application process.

The numbers that matter

  • C1 E S2 Classification (ISO 13007): The S2 rating signifies its high flexibility, accommodating significant thermal and shrinkage movement in substrates. This is critical for preventing cracked tiles and grout lines over timber floors or early age concrete. The E denotes an extended open time, giving a working window of approximately 30 minutes.
  • Grouting in 4 hours: This fast setting time means subsequent trades can proceed quickly. It significantly accelerates project timelines, allowing tiles to be ready for light traffic and grouting on the same day in many conditions.
  • Early Age Substrate Compatibility: Tile over concrete cured for just 7 days, or renders and screeds after only 16 hours. This capability reduces costly waiting periods, allowing construction schedules to remain on track.
  • Tensile Adhesion Strength (≥0.5 MPa across conditions): Maintaining a minimum bond strength of 0.5 MPa under dry, water immersion, heat, and freeze-thaw conditions ensures a durable, long-lasting fix, even when the substrate is subjected to environmental stresses.

What it's like to use

Mixing ARDEX X56 involves adding 6.75 litres of clean water to a 15kg bag of powder, mixing thoroughly with a paddle mixer for 2 minutes, allowing it to stand for 5 minutes, then mixing for a further 2 minutes to achieve a lump-free, creamy consistency. The adhesive offers approximately 30 minutes of open time and 30-45 minutes of adjustment time, providing ample opportunity for precise tile placement. Grouting can commence after just 4 hours. Clean tools immediately with water.

For porous substrates, including plasterboard or fibre-cement sheets, prime first with Ardex Multiprime. For internal timber floors or existing ceramic and vinyl tiles, use ARDEX Optima or ARDEX P9 as a primer to ensure optimal adhesion.

Where this product excels

  • Tiling internal sheet timber floors: Ideal for particleboard and plywood, its high flexibility accommodates the natural movement of timber substrates, preventing common issues like tile lifting or grout cracking.
  • Fast-track residential and commercial projects: When project schedules are tight, its ability to tile over early age concrete (7 days) and screeds/renders (16 hours), combined with 4-hour grouting, significantly reduces construction timeframes.
  • Renovations over existing tiles: Suitable for internal dry area renovations over sound, stable ceramic or solid vinyl tiles, reducing demolition and preparation work.
  • Shower recesses and wet areas: Provides a robust, system-compatible bond when used over ARDEX liquid applied undertile waterproofing membranes in shower recesses.
  • Tiling on metal surfaces: After appropriate preparation and priming, ARDEX X56 can securely bond tiles to metal, offering a flexible solution for unique architectural features.

How it fits in a real system

ARDEX X56 typically serves as the primary bonding agent in a flexible tiling system. For internal wet areas, it is applied directly over an ARDEX liquid applied undertile waterproofing membrane once cured. For internal timber floors, it follows priming with ARDEX Optima or ARDEX P9. When tiling over early age concrete or screeds, it is applied after the required curing period and any necessary priming with ARDEX Multiprime. The final step in all these systems is grouting with an appropriate ARDEX grout.

Choose this when

  • When you need to grout tiles in just 4 hours for rapid project turnaround.
  • When tiling over new concrete after only 7 days or renders/screeds after 16 hours.
  • When working with internal sheet timber floors (particleboard, plywood) that require a highly flexible adhesive.
  • When the substrate is prone to thermal or shrinkage movement and requires an S2 classified adhesive.
  • When tiling over existing stable ceramic or solid vinyl tiles in internal dry areas.
  • When tiling on properly prepared metal surfaces.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: External areas where ponding water is expected, as ARDEX X56 is not designed for continuous immersion in such conditions.
  • Not for: Applications in or around swimming pools; for these critical areas, a specialised adhesive like Ardex X 68 Tile Adhesive is required.
  • Not for: Commercial floors subject to heavy or dynamic loads; ARDEX offers specific heavy-duty systems for such applications.
  • Not for: Moisture-sensitive natural stone, which requires a specific stone adhesive to prevent staining or discolouration.
  • Not for: Applications requiring an extended open time beyond 30 minutes, where Ardex X 68 Tile Adhesive may be a more suitable choice.

ARDEX X56 is classified as C1 E S2 in accordance with ISO 13007. This means it is a standard cementitious adhesive (C1) with extended open time (E) and high deformability (S2). The S2 classification is a critical indicator of its ability to accommodate substrate movement, making it suitable for dynamic surfaces like timber or early age concrete, preventing common tile failures.

Frequently asked questions

Can ARDEX X56 be used for tiling directly onto timber floors?

Yes, ARDEX X56 is engineered for internal sheet timber floors (particleboard and plywood), provided they are structurally sound with a maximum deflection of 1/360 span and good ventilation. Strip timber floors must be fibre-cement sheeted first.

How quickly can I grout after fixing tiles with ARDEX X56?

Grouting can proceed after approximately 4 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. For dense tiles, humid conditions, or lower temperatures, allow additional cure time before grouting or foot traffic.

Is ARDEX X56 suitable for tiling in swimming pools?

No, ARDEX X56 is not suitable for use in or around swimming pools. Specific systems are required for submerged applications to ensure long-term performance and prevent failures.

What does the C1 E S2 classification mean for this adhesive?

The C1 E S2 classification (ISO 13007) indicates a cementitious, standard-strength, extended open time, and highly deformable (S2) adhesive. The S2 rating signifies its high flexibility, making it suitable for substrates subject to significant thermal or shrinkage movement.
