For large external sheet-membrane installations on concrete, screed, brick, CFC sheet, timber, and some PVC substrates, WA 98 Contact Adhesive provides the extended tack window required to secure membranes over high-volume areas. This solvent-based neoprene contact adhesive is formulated specifically for bonding ARDEX Weldtec, ARDEX Butynol, and ARDEX WPM 116 membrane systems.
How it works
WA 98 Contact Adhesive is a polychloroprene contact adhesive designed for simultaneous application to both the prepared substrate and the underside of the sheet membrane. Once applied by brush, roller, or spray, the solvent evaporates to leave a tacky, high-bond film. Bringing the two coated surfaces together after the initial flash-off creates an immediate, high-strength contact bond. For porous masonry or concrete, a two-coat system is used, either by applying a neat primer coat of WA 98 Contact Adhesive and allowing it to dry completely before the adhesive bonding coat, or by thinning the first coat up to 50% with ARDEX WA 98 Solvent to penetrate deep into the pores before applying a neat second coat.
Numbers that matter
-
4 to 8 square metres per litre coverage: Coverage rate per coat applied to both the substrate and sheet underside, varying based on substrate porosity and application method.
-
15 to 60 minute working time: The functional open window to bed the sheet membrane after application, allowing installers to manage large, continuous external runs.
-
15 to 20 minute dry time: Typical interval before the adhesive becomes tacky to the touch and ready for bedding, depending on ambient air conditions and substrate temperatures.
-
10°C to 35°C application temperature: The safe ambient and substrate temperature range to ensure correct solvent evaporation and tack development.
-
30 to 35N peel strength (Butyl): Mechanical bond performance (tested to ASTM D903 on plywood) ensuring long-term adhesion of Butynol sheets; EPDM achieves 7 to 10N.
Where to use it
Use this contact adhesive for external sheet membrane installations on:
- Concrete and screeds
- Brickwork
- Compressed fibre cement (CFC) sheet
- Timber
- Selected PVC type substrates
Substrate moisture and preparation
All surfaces must be mechanically prepared and vacuumed to remove dirt, dust, curing compounds, oils, grease, and surface sealers before application. Masonry and concrete substrates with high moisture levels require specific pre-treatment to prevent bond failure:
-
High moisture threshold: When substrate moisture exceeds 80% relative humidity (tested to ASTM F2170) or 15g/m²/24hrs (tested to ASTM F1869), typically equivalent to 5% or greater moisture on a digital non-destructive meter, ARDEX WPM 300 (HydrEpoxy) must be used as the primer.
-
Primer application: Apply two coats of ARDEX WPM 300 at 3 square metres per litre per coat, and allow to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
-
Cure window constraint: The ARDEX WPM 300 primer must be fully cured before applying WA 98 Contact Adhesive. Applying the contact adhesive over uncured epoxy will noticeably damage the barrier coat. Once cured, apply a neat primer coat of WA 98 Contact Adhesive, let it dry completely, then apply the bonding coat.
Limitations
-
External use only: Must not be used for internal applications.
-
Flammability: Highly flammable liquid and vapour. Keep away from naked flames, electrical appliances, lights, and ignition sources. Use only in well-ventilated areas.
-
Solvent entrapment: Embedding the sheet membrane too early before the adhesive is tacky may trap solvents, causing the membrane to bubble.
-
UV exposure: Do not leave the applied adhesive exposed to UV light for long periods.
-
Moisture risk: High substrate moisture content will negatively affect adhesion, drying, and curing performance if not primed with ARDEX WPM 300.
Application methods
Stir or shake the unopened 20-litre drum thoroughly before use. Apply using one of the following methods:
-
Brush or roller: Apply evenly to both the membrane underside and substrate. If the tack time elapses before bonding, the adhesive can be reapplied.
-
Spray application: Can be applied via air-driven or airless spray equipment. The adhesive can be thinned with ARDEX WA 98 Solvent to reduce viscosity and improve flow. Trial the mix ratio with your specific spray equipment before full application. Clean all equipment with ARDEX WA 98 Solvent before the adhesive dries.
