For exposed external areas where an underlying waterproofing membrane requires protection from sun and foot traffic, Silcor Top Coat 80 Waterproof Membrane provides a tough, colour-fast, aliphatic polyurethane finish. It is formulated to protect SILCOR 580, SILCOR 780 HI-LP, SILCOR 790 HI (CHEMSPRAY 790), and SILCOR 990 MP (A) (CHEMSPRAY 690) membrane systems in high-exposure zones including balconies, decks, plant room roofs, and lift motor room roofs.

UV protection and foot-traffic durability

Silcor Top Coat 80 Waterproof Membrane seals exposed external waterproofing systems against UV degradation and physical wear. The aliphatic polyurethane chemistry ensures long-term colour-fast performance on highly visible details such as perimeter turn-ups, penetrations, and window or sill flashings. Once applied, the coating develops immediate resistance to rain damage, preventing wash-offs on unstable weather days. It cures to a permanently flexible, non-slip finish with high adhesion to the underlying SILCOR membrane, maintaining system integrity under foot traffic without cracking or peeling.

Numbers that matter

  • Drying time of 2 hours (at 25ºC): Allows rapid trade access to the deck or roof area after application.
  • Shore Hardness of 75-80°A: Delivers a tough, trafficable barrier that resists mechanical scuffing and puncture.
  • Minimum coverage of 0.3 kg/m²: Achieves the minimum required dry film thickness (DFT) of 0.15mm to ensure reliable UV and wear protection.
  • 5:1 mix ratio by weight: High-precision resin-to-hardener proportioning required to ensure complete cross-linking and full cure properties.
  • Tensile strength of 2 MPa (AS1145): Provides the mechanical strength necessary to withstand movement across joints and flashing details.

Where to use it

This protective coating is suitable for all grades of SILCOR waterproof membranes used in exposed external situations, specifically:

  • Plant room and lift motor room roofs
  • Balconies and recreation decks
  • Perimeter turn-ups and structural penetrations
  • Sill or window flashings

Application and mixing sequence

To ensure proper curing and performance, installers must follow the specific mixing and application steps:

  • Substrate preparation: The surface of the SILCOR membrane must be completely clean and dry before applying the top coat.
  • Mixing: Stir the resin and hardener components separately with a clean blade. Combine them in a clean, dry container at the 5:1 weight ratio and mix thoroughly using a high-speed dissolver for 5 minutes prior to application.
  • Manual application: Apply in two coats using a brush or roller. Work the second coat in a cross direction to the first coat to ensure a uniform, pinhole-free finish.
  • Spray application: Apply in a single, continuous wet-on-wet spray pass.
  • Clean-up: Clean wet tools and equipment with MULTITEK Xylene or methylated spirits before the coating cures.

Limitations

  • Do not attempt to reuse mixed product once it has become thick and stringy; discard it immediately.
  • Do NOT add solvent to the mix under any circumstances.
  • Once opened, sealed pails may solidify within a few days due to atmospheric moisture exposure.
  • Do not store unmixed product where it is exposed to weather and direct sun; keep in a cool, dry, protected area.

Frequently asked questions

What is SILCOR Top Coat 80 used for?

SILCOR Top Coat 80 is a UV-resistant protective coating for exposed SILCOR waterproof membrane systems. It provides a durable, non-slip, colour-fast finish on roofs, balconies, decks, plant rooms, flashings and other exposed waterproofing details.

Which waterproof membranes is SILCOR Top Coat 80 compatible with?

It is designed for use over SILCOR 580, SILCOR 780 HI-LP, SILCOR 790 HI and SILCOR 990 MP waterproof membrane systems. Compatibility with other membrane brands is not stated in the product data sheet.

Can SILCOR Top Coat 80 be used on exposed balconies and roofs?

Yes. It is specifically designed for exposed external areas including balconies, decks, plant room roofs, lift motor room roofs, perimeter turn-ups, penetrations and window or sill flashings where UV resistance is required.

How is SILCOR Top Coat 80 applied?

Mix the resin and hardener at a 5:1 ratio by weight after stirring each component separately. Apply two coats by brush or roller, with the second coat applied across the first, or use a single wet-on-wet spray application. Do not add solvent.

How much SILCOR Top Coat 80 do I need?

The recommended application rate is a minimum of 0.3 kg/m² of mixed product. This provides a minimum dry film thickness of 0.15 mm.

How long does SILCOR Top Coat 80 take to dry?

At 25°C, the coating has a typical drying time of approximately 2 hours. Actual drying time may vary depending on site conditions.

Can SILCOR Top Coat 80 be thinned with solvent?

No. The product data sheet specifically states that solvent must not be added. Discard the mixed material once it becomes thick or stringy.
