A stainless square notch trowel for tile adhesive beds, in notch sizes from 4mm to 15mm. Pick the size the adhesive datasheet calls: the notch sets how much adhesive goes down, and coverage is where bond failures start.

Spread flat with the straight edge, comb at 45 degrees in one direction, and lay within open time. Back-butter large tiles so coverage meets the standard. Wash the notches before the adhesive cures; packed notches ruin the spread rate.
Match the notch size to the datasheet and tile size: too shallow starves the bond, too deep wastes adhesive. Replace the trowel when the notches lose their square edge.
