For interior and exterior floor slabs where rapid drying is required to lay timber, vinyl, carpet, or stone coverings without long curing delays, Mapecem Pronto is a pre-blended, ready-to-use mortar that controls shrinkage and dries in 24 hours. It provides a fast-track screeding method for new concrete slabs, repairs in high-traffic commercial zones like supermarkets and hospitals, and screeds incorporating underfloor heating systems.

What it does

Mapecem Pronto eliminates the risk of weak screeds caused by incorrect on-site sand grading or binder dosage errors. Because it is pre-blended, you only mix it with water to achieve high mechanical strength, reaching a compressive strength of over 40 N/mm² in 1 day and over 62 N/mm² after 28 days. Its rapid hydration chemistry binds mixing water internally, allowing the screed to dry to less than 2% residual moisture within 24 hours so you can lay moisture-sensitive resilient floor coverings, PVC, linoleum, and wood safely. It achieves a CT - C60 - F10 - A1FL classification under European Standard EN 13813, verifying its high compressive and flexural strength profile.

Numbers that matter

  • 20 to 30 minutes pot life: Highly fast-setting mix that must be cast, tamped, and finished quickly. Mixed mortar cannot be transported or re-tempered once setting begins.
  • 2 to 3 hours to foot traffic: Allows other trades early access to the floor slab without damaging the screed surface.
  • 3 to 4 hours stone window: Rapid drying allows ceramic tiles and natural stone to be laid directly over the screed in a fraction of the time required by standard sand-and-cement screeds.
  • 24 hours resilient window: Reaches under 2% residual moisture (carbide method) for laying moisture-sensitive wood, PVC, vinyl, and linoleum coverings.
  • 20 kg/m² per cm of thickness: Standard consumption rate depending on compaction levels to help you calculate exact bag requirements for the slab area.

Where to use it

Mapecem Pronto is suitable for three distinct installation types on concrete substrates and floor slabs:

  • Bonded screeds (10 mm to 70 mm thick): Applied fresh-on-fresh over a bonding slurry consisting of 1 part by weight Planicrete SP and 1 part by weight Mapecem binder. For high-stress areas, replace the slurry with Eporip. For thicknesses over 50 mm, incorporate galvanised metal reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.1.
  • Unbonded screeds (35 mm to 70 mm thick): Laid over a polythene isolation slip-sheet to allow independent movement. Incorporate galvanised metal reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.1 on compressible substrates, over piping, or at thicknesses exceeding 60 mm.
  • Floating screeds (55 mm to 70 mm thick): Laid over insulation or underfloor heating systems. Heating pipes must be located a minimum of 25 mm below the screed surface (reduced to 15 mm for residential installations) with reinforcing mesh placed over the pipes. Heating systems can be commissioned after 4 days.

Limitations

  • Do not mix Mapecem Pronto with other binders (such as Mapecem, Topcem, cement, lime, or gypsum) or aggregates.
  • Do not add water and do not re-mix the mortar if it has already begun to set.
  • Do not wet the surface of the finished screed.
  • For resilient installations, carry out relative humidity and pH level readings on the concrete substrate in accordance with AS 1884. If rising damp is present, apply a suitable moisture vapour barrier (such as Primer MF or Mapeproof 1K Turbo) above the screed.
  • Do not transport blended Mapecem Pronto due to its fast-setting characteristics.

Installation

Mix one 20 kg bag of Mapecem Pronto with 1.5 to 1.7 litres of water for 3 to 4 minutes using a paddle mixer, drum mixer, or forced action mixer. Do not modify the water ratio under any circumstances, as this will compromise the final performance. Spread, tamp, and float the mix immediately; each batch must be fully placed and finished within 30 minutes of mixing. When work is interrupted, cut the screed vertically and insert 3 mm to 6 mm diameter, 20 cm to 30 cm long steel dowels spaced at 20 cm to 30 cm to tie the construction joints and prevent cracking.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I install flooring on Mapecem Pronto?

Tiles can be laid on Mapecem Pronto after 3–4 hours. For moisture-sensitive floor coverings such as timber or vinyl, the screed is ready after 24 hours with low residual moisture.

What is the compressive strength of Mapecem Pronto?

Mapecem Pronto achieves over 40 N/mm² in compressive strength after one day and over 50 N/mm² after three days. This meets the EN 13813 CT-C60-F10-A1FL classification.

Can Mapecem Pronto be used with underfloor heating?

Yes, Mapecem Pronto is suitable for screeds incorporating underfloor heating systems. It provides reliable performance without requiring additional plasticisers.

Applying Mapecem Pronto: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Mixing

Mix 20 kg with 1.5–1.7 L water for 3–4 minutes.

    Timing: Use within 20–30 minutes
Pro Tip: Do not add extra water—this protects strength and drying performance.
  2. Placement

Place, compact, and float immediately to achieve a smooth surface.

Pro Tip: Work quickly—fast set means better finish and no weak joints.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Mixing with other binders or aggregates. This compromises the engineered performance and can lead to screed failure.

Safety and handling

Personal protective equipment

Wear gloves, eye protection, and a dust mask when handling the powder to prevent exposure.

Ventilation

Use in well-ventilated areas to minimise dust inhalation during mixing and application.

Substrate guide

Correct surface preparation ensures optimal adhesion and screed performance, preventing costly failures.

Concrete substrates

Surface prep: Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free from oil, grease, dust, or loose material. Any existing movement joints must be carried through the new screed layer.

Primer: Required for bonded screeds. Use a bonding slurry, such as Mapei Planicrete SP, applied fresh-on-fresh for secure adhesion.
