For high-traffic commercial slabs and residential subfloors where rapid turnaround is critical, Mapecem is a hydraulic binder that produces shrinkage-compensated screeds ready for floor coverings in 24 hours. Formulated to control water loss and dry independently of thickness, it achieves a residual moisture level below 2% within a day, allowing the fast installation of timber, vinyl, carpet, and tiles with minimal facility downtime.

What it does

Mapecem is mixed on-site with dry, clean graded aggregates and water to create a high-strength screeding mortar. It develops rapid mechanical strength and high density, allowing tile and stone to be laid after 3 to 4 hours, and resilient or timber floors after 24 hours. The rapid hydration mechanism locks in the mix water, ensuring the screed cures to a highly compact structure that resists alkalies, oils, and solvents under continuous traffic in environments like supermarkets, airports, and hospitals.

Numbers that matter

  • 24-hour drying time: Screeds dry to less than 2% residual moisture by weight, preventing moisture-induced adhesive failure or timber cupping when floor coverings are installed the following day.
  • 20 to 30-minute open time: A fast working window that requires the mix to be spread, levelled, and tamped immediately after mixing.
  • 33 to 47 MPa compressive strength (at 24 hours): High early mechanical strength depending on the mix ratio (350 kg to 450 kg of Mapecem per cubic metre of sand), rising to 47 to 57 MPa after 28 days to support heavy traffic loads.
  • 2 to 3 hours to light foot traffic: Allows trade access to the work area to prepare for final levelling or tile installation after only 4 hours.
  • -30°C to +90°C service temperature: Safe for use with embedded underfloor heating systems and in areas exposed to thermal fluctuations.

Where to use it

  • Bonded screeds (10 to 70 mm thick): Applied fresh-on-fresh over a 2 to 3 mm thick slurry of Planicrete SP and Mapecem on prepared, clean concrete.
  • Unbonded and floating screeds (35 to 70 mm thick): Laid over a polyethylene isolating sheet on existing or new slabs, or over compression-resistant insulation boards.
  • Underfloor heating: Suitable for screeds incorporating heating pipes, provided pipes are located at least 25 mm below the surface and covered with reinforcing mesh. Heating systems can be commissioned after 4 days.
  • Patching and repairs: Quick-setting patching of existing screeds in busy public zones subject to continuous foot traffic.

Limitations

  • Do not mix Mapecem with other cements, lime, gypsum, or fine sand alone. Use graded aggregates from 0 to 8 mm.
  • Do not leave Mapecem dry-mixed with aggregates; add water immediately. Do not exceed 3 to 4 minutes of mixing time, and do not mix in batching plants or transport via concrete mixer trucks due to the fast setting time.
  • Do not add water to a prepared mix or remix the mortar after it has begun to set. Do not wet the surface of the laid screed.
  • Since Mapecem screeds are exceptionally compact, absorption of water-dispersion adhesives is slow. For timber installations sensitive to moisture, use Ultrabond P990 1K polyurethane adhesive.
  • For resilient installations, substrate relative humidity and pH testing must be performed in accordance with AS 1884. If a moisture barrier is required, apply a suitable vapour barrier such as Primer MF or Mapeproof 1K Turbo above the screed.
  • To verify dry weight moisture levels, always use a carbide hygrometer. Electronic hygrometers provide only indicative readings.

Installation and detailing

For bonded applications, the concrete substrate must be clean, dry, free of cracks, dust, wax, oil, and traces of gypsum, with existing joints carried through the screed. Mix one 20 kg bag of Mapecem with 80 to 100 kg of graded 0-8 mm gravel and 4 to 8 kg of water depending on aggregate moisture. Incorporate saw cuts to one third of the screed thickness in large bay sizes. If work is interrupted for more than 1 hour, cut the screed perpendicularly and insert steel rods (3 to 6 mm diameter, 20 to 30 cm long) spaced 20 to 30 cm apart into the edge to prevent cracking and differential movement. For bonded screeds over 50 mm thick, or unbonded installations on compressible substrates or over 60 mm thick, incorporate galvanised mesh reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.1.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can flooring be installed on Mapecemp screeds?

Tiles can be installed after 3-4 hours. For moisture-sensitive flooring like timber or vinyl, the screed is ready for installation after 24 hours, assuming residual moisture is below 2%.

Is Mapecemp suitable for screeds with underfloor heating?

Yes, Mapecemp is designed for underfloor heating systems. It provides stable performance and the heating system can be commissioned after 4 days when installed correctly.

Can I mix Mapecemp with other types of binders?

No. Do not mix Mapecemp with other binders such as cement, lime, or gypsum. This will compromise the performance and strength properties of the screed.

What Australian standards apply to Mapecemp screed installations?

Installations should comply with relevant Australian standards. For reinforcement, refer to AS 3958.1. For resilient flooring, AS 1884 specifies moisture testing requirements before installation.

Applying MAPECEM: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure substrate is clean, dry, and structurally sound. Remove contaminants and repair defects before application.

    Timing: Complete prior to mixing.
Pro Tip: Poor prep leads to failure—get this right and everything else follows.
  2. Mixing

Mix MAPECEM with graded aggregates (0–8 mm) and water for 3–4 minutes until a cohesive consistency is achieved.

    Timing: Use within 20–30 minutes.
Pro Tip: Don’t overmix or delay—rapid setting is what gives you the speed advantage.
  3. Placement & Levelling

Spread and compact the screed immediately after mixing. Use levelling strips and tamp for a smooth finish.

Timing: Place within 30 minutes of mixing.
Pro Tip: Work efficiently in sections—this keeps the finish consistent and avoids cold joints.
  4. Curing & Readiness

Allow screed to cure naturally. Light foot traffic is possible after 2–3 hours, with full drying achieved in 24 hours.

Timing: Tiles: 3–4 hours | Full flooring: 24 hours
Pro Tip: Test moisture before sensitive flooring—this locks in a first-time-right install.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Mixing with other binders (cement, lime, gypsum) as this will compromise performance and strength.
  • Not for: Use with incorrect water ratios, as this reduces strength and extends drying time. Strictly follow mix guidelines.
  • Not for: Remixing or adding water once setting begins, as this leads to weak, inconsistent screeds.
  • Not for: Batching plants or long transport due to its rapid setting properties, which require immediate placement.

Safety and handling

Personal protective equipment

Wear gloves, eye protection, and protective clothing. This product is classified as an irritant.

Ventilation

Use in well-ventilated areas, particularly when mixing, to minimise dust exposure.

First aid

  • Eyes: Rinse immediately with clean water and seek medical advice.
  • Skin: Wash with soap and water.
  • Inhaled: Move to fresh air.
  • Swallowed: Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.

Substrate guide

Correct substrate preparation ensures optimal bonding and long-term performance for Mapecemp screeds.

Concrete substrates (bonded screeds)

Surface prep: Substrate must be dry, structurally sound, and free from dust, oil, paint, wax, or loose material. Existing cracks require repair, and joints must be carried through the screed. Ensure the concrete has adequate compressive and tensile strength.

Primer: Required. Apply a fresh-on-fresh bonding slurry using Planicrete SP mixed with Mapecemp to ensure full adhesion and prevent debonding.

Unbonded and floating screeds

Surface prep: Install a polyethylene separation layer over the substrate or existing membrane. This prevents rising damp and allows for independent movement of the screed.

Primer: Not required. The system relies on separation, not adhesion. Ensure the membrane is continuous to avoid moisture ingress.

Substrates with underfloor heating

Surface prep: The insulation layer must be compressively stable. Heating pipes must be positioned at least 25 mm below the screed surface. Reinforcement mesh is required over the heating elements.

Primer: Not required. Focus on correct screed thickness and reinforcement to prevent cracking from thermal cycling.
