For thinning and cleaning solvent-based products, Adheseal Xylene Solvent provides a fast-evaporating hydrocarbon liquid that breaks down heavy residues, unhardened resins, and cleans work tools on site.
What it does
This pure hydrocarbon liquid acts as a highly effective solvent carrier, lowering the viscosity of solvent-based coatings and sealants for smoother application. It dissolves grease, oils, and wet adhesives, evaporating fully at 100% volatile by volume to leave surfaces clean and dry. Because it is highly mobile and insoluble in water, it effectively displaces moisture and cuts through stubborn contaminants on metal and masonry before sealer application.
Numbers that matter
-
23°C to 27°C flash point: Indicates a Class 3 Flammable Liquid requiring flameproof equipment and the elimination of all ignition sources within the work area.
-
100% volatile by volume: Evaporates entirely without leaving behind oily residues that could interfere with subsequent adhesive or coating adhesion.
-
0.870 specific gravity: Lighter than water (insoluble, with water solubility of only 0.175 kg/m³), allowing it to sit on top of moisture during initial surface cleaning.
Limitations
- Do not allow the product to contact clothing; it can absorb through the skin and cause severe irritation, swelling, or blistering.
- Do not mix with strong oxidising agents, as this causes violent, hazardous reactions.
- Do not allow the solvent to enter soils, sewers, or waterways; the product is highly mobile in soil and carries a moderate risk of bioaccumulation in aquatic species.
- Avoid inhalation of fumes, mist, or vapours; exposure causes dizziness and drowsiness, with the potential for organ damage over prolonged use.
Safe handling and storage
Adheseal Xylene Solvent is a Scheduled Poison S5 (Caution) and a Class 3 Flammable Liquid. Keep all containers standing upright in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space out of direct sunlight, away from heat, open flames, and foodstuffs. Ensure the work area is ventilated to maintain exposure levels below the Safe Work Australia TWA of 80 ppm (350 mg/m³) for Xylene. When handling, wear safety shoes, chemical goggles, an apron, and suitable protective gloves (nitrile rubber is recommended for intermittent contact).
