Description
x

Potable water certification for critical facade joints. When a reliable, elastic sealant is needed for concrete and masonry that meets AS/NZS 4020:2018, Sikaflex PRO delivers. It ensures durable, flexible seals in movement and connection joints, even where drinking water contact is a factor.

Why this product exists

Sikaflex PRO is formulated as a 1-component, moisture-curing polyurethane sealant specifically engineered for elastic movement and connection joints. It addresses the critical need for a high-performance sealant that adheres effectively to porous substrates like concrete and masonry, while also carrying essential potable water approval. This formulation prioritises durable flexibility, making it suitable for both general internal and external sealing, especially where AS/NZS 4020:2018 compliance is non-negotiable.

The numbers that matter

With a movement capability of ±25%, Sikaflex PRO accommodates the dynamic shifts inherent in building facades and large concrete elements, preventing premature failure. A Shore A hardness of approximately 25 means it remains elastic and flexible, while its impressive 750% tensile strain at break provides a substantial safety margin against unexpected stress. It cures at approximately 3 mm per 24 hours, offering a practical working and tooling window for effective application.

What it's like to use

Sikaflex PRO provides a generous tooling time of approximately 150 minutes, allowing for precise joint finishing. Substrates must be clean, dry, and sound. For optimal adhesion in critical applications or on specific substrates, Sika Aktivator-205 or Sika Primer-3 N may be required, particularly on porous materials like concrete or masonry. A closed-cell polyethylene foam backer rod ensures correct joint geometry and prevents three-sided adhesion. Tools should be cleaned immediately after use with Sika Remover-208.

Where this product excels

Sikaflex PRO excels in critical building details such as cavity wall terminations and vertical upturn chase details, where it serves as a robust and approved sealant. It is highly effective for movement and connection joints in concrete and masonry facades, where its ±25% movement capability ensures long-term flexibility against thermal cycling. This sealant is also a primary choice for general indoor and outdoor sealing, especially when AS/NZS 4020:2018 potable water approval is a core requirement, making it suitable for sealing joints in structures related to drinking water.

How it fits in a real system

This product is consistently specified as the final sealant in critical waterproofing and facade systems. For instance, in a vertical upturn termination chase detail, Sikaflex PRO acts as the approved sealant, securing the integrity of the junction. Similarly, in pipe and post detailing, it provides the essential, durable seal where penetrations occur through critical elements.

Choose this when

  • When elastic movement joints in concrete or masonry facades require a 1-component polyurethane sealant.
  • When AS/NZS 4020:2018 potable water approval is a non-negotiable requirement for your sealing application.
  • When working on cavity wall terminations or vertical upturn chase details that require an approved, high-performance sealant.
  • When seeking good workability and reliable adhesion to a broad range of common building substrates.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Joints requiring movement beyond ±25%.
  • Not for: Direct contact with natural stone, bituminous substrates, natural rubber, or EPDM rubber.
  • Not for: Joints in or around swimming pools, or areas under constant water pressure or permanent immersion.
  • Not for: Exposure to alcohol-containing products during the uncured phase, which can interfere with the curing process.

Sikaflex PRO carries AS/NZS 4020:2018 approval, certifying its suitability for contact with drinking water. This standard is critical for any sealing application in water storage, treatment, or distribution infrastructure where potable water safety is paramount.

Sikaflex PRO vs. Sikaflex-11 FC

While both Sikaflex PRO and Sikaflex-11 FC are versatile 1-component polyurethane sealants with excellent workability, Sikaflex PRO stands apart with its crucial AS/NZS 4020:2018 potable water approval. This makes Sikaflex PRO the definitive choice for applications where the sealant must come into contact with drinking water, such as in water storage or treatment facilities, or specific facade elements that interface with rainwater harvesting systems. For general sealing and bonding tasks where potable water approval is not required, Sikaflex-11 FC remains a strong option.

Applying Sikaflex PRO: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Step 1: Joint & Substrate Preparation

The foundation of a durable seal is a properly prepared substrate. Ensure the surface is structurally sound, clean, and dry.

    Cleaning Porous Substrates (Concrete, Masonry)

Use a wire brush, grinding, or sandblasting to remove all laitance, dust, and loose material. Remove all contaminants like form-release agents, curing compounds, and old sealant residues.

    Cleaning Non-Porous Substrates (Metals, PVC)

Clean with a suitable solvent and a clean, lint-free cloth. For metals, light abrasion may be required to remove oxidation. Always perform a final wipe to remove any residues.

Pro Tip: Use masking tape to protect the joint faces and ensure clean, sharp sealant lines. Apply the tape before priming.
  2. Step 2: Priming & Backing Rod Installation

For critical applications, priming is essential for optimal adhesion. Backing rods are non-negotiable for controlling sealant depth and preventing three-sided adhesion.

    Primer Application

Apply the recommended Sika primer or activator in a thin, continuous film using a brush or clean cloth. Avoid ponding or over-application.

    Backing Rod Installation

Insert a closed-cell polyethylene foam backing rod to the required depth to achieve the correct width-to-depth ratio (typically 2:1). Ensure the rod is compressed by approx. 25% to hold it in place.

Timing: Allow primers to fully flash off before applying sealant. This is typically 30-60 minutes, but check the primer's specific data sheet. Do not exceed the maximum overcoat time (usually 8 hours).
  3. Step 3: Sealant Application & Tooling

Proper application and tooling are crucial for a professional finish and long-term performance.

    Application

Cut the nozzle to the required bead size. Extrude the sealant into the joint from the base, ensuring continuous, uniform application and avoiding any air entrapment.

    Tooling Off

Firmly tool the sealant against the joint sides and backing rod. Use a spatula or slicker with a suitable tooling agent (e.g., Sika® Tooling Agent N) to create a smooth, concave finish that sheds water.

Timing: Tooling must be completed within the sealant's tooling time (~150 minutes). Remove masking tape immediately after tooling for the cleanest edges.
