Where not to use it

  • SA Sanitary is not recommended for use on submerged joints where porous substrates permit water to the bond interface.
  • Not for certain rubber products where bleeding of plasticiser may occur.
  • Not for horizontal walkways where sealant will be subject to abrasion.
  • Cannot be painted, as paint will not adhere to sealant.
  • Not recommended for use on polycarbonate plastic.
  • Suitability for use on other types of plastic including extruded gutter profiles should be tested prior to application.

Frequently asked questions

How does SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant prevent mould?

SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant contains an anti-fungicide to prevent mould growth. This formulation resists mildew in prolonged hot and humid environments, maintaining a clean finish in wet areas.

Can this silicone sealant be painted?

No, SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant cannot be painted. Paint will not adhere to the cured sealant surface. Plan your application to account for this limitation.

What surfaces is SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant suitable for?

It adheres well to common building materials such as glass, ceramics, aluminium, masonry, stone, concrete, most metals, and many plastics. For unusual plastics or extruded gutter profiles, testing prior to full application is recommended.

What is the cure time for SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant?

This sealant has a skin time of 5-10 minutes at 25°C and 50% relative humidity, allowing for tooling. A 10mm deep bead will fully cure in 5-7 days under these conditions.

What are the main safety considerations for using this product?

SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant is classified as hazardous, causing serious eye damage and potentially an allergic skin reaction. Wear safety glasses and gloves, and ensure good ventilation during use as it emits Methyl Ethyl Ketoxime (MEKO) while curing.

Applications and benefits

Where SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant is used, what it delivers, and who uses it
Application Key benefit Primary trades
Sealing in kitchens and vanities Prevents mould and mildew growth, ensuring a hygienic and aesthetic finish in food preparation and wet areas. Cabinet makers, Plumbers, Builders
Sealing in bathrooms and shower screens Resists mildew in hot, humid conditions; provides a durable, waterproof seal that stays clean. Tilers, Plumbers, Glaziers, Builders

Weatherproofing applications Maintains integrity in various weather conditions with outstanding weatherability and ±25% dynamic joint movement. Builders, Roofers, Masons

Application Guide

  1. Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dirt, grease, or contaminants.
  2. Cut nozzle at a 45-degree angle to the desired bead width.
  3. Apply using a standard sealant gun.
  4. Tool the sealant within 5-10 minutes to achieve a smooth finish.
  5. Allow full cure for 5-7 days at 25°C and 50% relative humidity.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Submerged joints where porous substrates allow water to reach the bond interface, as this can compromise long-term performance.
  • Not for: Certain rubber products where plasticiser bleeding may occur, which can lead to staining or adhesion loss.
  • Not for: Horizontal walkways or areas subject to significant abrasion, as the sealant is not designed for such wear.
  • Not for: Painting, as paint will not adhere to the silicone surface.
  • Not for: Polycarbonate plastic.
  • Note: Suitability for other plastics, including extruded gutter profiles, should always be tested before application.

Safety and handling

Signal Word: Danger

This material is classified as Hazardous according to Safe Work Australia GHS 7, specifically causing serious eye damage and potentially an allergic skin reaction. It emits Methyl Ethyl Ketoxime (MEKO) during curing.

Personal protective equipment

Wear safety shoes, overalls, and safety glasses. Use gloves; nitrile rubber gloves are suggested for intermittent contact, but users should assess suitability based on specific conditions. Always wash hands before eating, drinking, or using the toilet.

Ventilation

Use in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing in vapours, particularly during the curing process when MEKO is emitted.

First aid

  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. Seek urgent medical assistance.
  • Skin Contact: If skin or hair contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and flush skin and hair with running water. Seek medical assistance if swelling, redness, blistering, or irritation develops.
  • Inhalation: Remove the affected person from exposure to fresh air. If effects persist, seek medical advice.
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water and seek medical advice. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, out of direct sunlight, and away from foodstuffs and incompatible materials. Storage temperature should not exceed 25°C to maintain the 12-month shelf life. Keep containers upright and closed when not in use. Dispose of material and containers according to local regulations.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation is crucial for reliable adhesion and performance, preventing premature sealant failure.

General preparation for most substrates

Surface prep: Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, oil, rust, and water. Use white spirits or mechanical cleaning with a lint-free cloth. Do not use soap or detergent, as residues can compromise adhesion. For remedial work, all existing sealant must be thoroughly removed.

Primer: Optional. Some surfaces may benefit from a primer for enhanced adhesion; if a primer is used, allow it to dry completely before applying the sealant.

Plastics

Surface prep: Clean as per general instructions. For specific plastics, contact Sealants Australasia for a recommended cleaning solvent to avoid surface degradation or adhesion issues.

Primer: Optional. Always test suitability on other types of plastic, including extruded gutter profiles, before full application.
