Spread flat, comb at 45 degrees in one direction, and lay the tile within the adhesive's open time. Check coverage by lifting a tile now and then: the back should show full contact, not dry patches.
Notch wear is slow and silent: when ribs go shallow, coverage drops. Replace the trowel once the notches lose their square edge.
