For prep work prior to applying adhesives, sealants, or surface primers, Adheseal IPA Cleaner removes surface contaminants to ensure a clean substrate and a reliable bond. This 100% isopropyl alcohol cleaner removes fluxes, light oils, grime, and oxides, then evaporates within seconds without leaving a residue or compromising the cure of subsequent compounds.

How it works

By stripping away surface oils and contaminants, the cleaner prepares the substrate for maximum bond strength. Because it evaporates rapidly leaving zero residue, it does not interfere with the chemical curing of PU, MS, Acrylic, or Silicone compounds. It is compatible with a wide range of common construction substrates and is safe on most plastics.

Where to use it

The cleaner is suitable for preparing substrates prior to applying Adheseal 50A surface prep, primers, sealants, adhesives, and membranes. Compatible substrates include:

  • Masonry, brick, stone, and porcelain
  • Metal, aluminium, and powder coat
  • Timber, rubber, and fibreglass
  • Most plastics and painted surfaces
  • Waterproof membranes

Limitations

  • Do not use in environments where fire is present.
  • Do not mix with bleach.
  • May damage paint, wood finishes, and varnish.
  • A preliminary test must be conducted before use to ensure the cleaner does not affect the substrate, as affected areas may take time to show damage.

Application instructions

Always work in a well-ventilated area. Dampen a clean, dry rag—preferably white to avoid dye transfer—by placing it firmly over the top of the bottle and tipping the bottle over. Do not allow the liquid to drip or pool on the floor or your hands. Wipe the material down slowly and gently, then allow it to dry.

Ensure no pools of liquid are left behind; wipe away any excess with a clean, dry, white rag. You may use a cool blow dryer to clear away any residual fibres or dust left by the rag. Once there is no evidence of residue, you can begin applying your primers, sealants, adhesives, or membranes.

Frequently asked questions

Can Adheseal IPA Cleaner be used with all Adheseal sealants and adhesives?

Yes, Adheseal IPA Cleaner is designed for surface preparation prior to applying Adheseal 50A surface prep and our range of sealants and adhesives. It is compatible with PU, MS, Acrylic, and Silicone compounds, supporting maximum bond strength.

Is Adheseal IPA Cleaner safe for use on all common building materials?

Adheseal IPA Cleaner is safe on most plastics, masonry, metal, timber, stone, rubber, fibreglass, porcelain, aluminium, and powder coat. Always conduct a preliminary test, especially on painted surfaces, wood finishes, or varnish, as it may cause damage.

Why is a residue-free cleaner critical for bonding applications?

Contaminants like oils, grime, and fluxes reduce adhesion. Adheseal IPA Cleaner evaporates completely, leaving no residue, ensuring the sealant or adhesive can achieve its documented bond strength without compromise to curing.

What are the primary safety precautions for handling Adheseal IPA Cleaner?

Adheseal IPA Cleaner is a highly flammable liquid. Use in well-ventilated areas, away from ignition sources. Wear safety shoes, chemical goggles, gloves, and an apron. Do not breathe fumes, as it may cause drowsiness or dizziness.

Applying Adheseal IPA Cleaner: Protocols & Best Practices

General Application Steps:
  1. Preparation: Choose a clean, lint-free rag. Shake the container if needed.
  2. Application: Invert the bottle onto the rag. Let the IPA soak in for a few seconds. Wipe surface thoroughly.
  3. Drying: Allow surface to air dry. IPA will evaporate within seconds. Use a dry cloth to remove any pooling.
  4. Final Step: Once surface is visibly clean and dry, proceed with primer or sealant application.
Trade-Specific Scenario Guides:
For Builders: Pre-sealant surface prep

The Engineering Challenge: Dust, oil, or paint residue compromise adhesion of waterproofing membranes and expansion joint sealants.

The System-Based Solution with Adheseal IPA Cleaner: A single IPA wipe removes contaminants and evaporates cleanly—ensuring sealant bonding is unimpeded.

Best Practice Note: Avoid pooling or reusing a dirty rag, which can reintroduce contaminants. Always work clean.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Use on waterproof membranes.
  • Not for: Environments where fire or ignition sources are present, as this is a highly flammable liquid and vapour.
  • Caution: May damage some painted surfaces, wood finishes, and varnish. Always test before full application.
  • Incompatible with: Do not mix with bleach or strong oxidising agents.

Safety and handling

Signal Word: Danger

Personal protective equipment

Wear safety shoes, gloves (nitrile rubber recommended for intermittent contact), apron, and chemical goggles. A suitable respirator is advised in enclosed spaces.

Ventilation

Use only in well-ventilated areas. Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain air concentrations below exposure standards. Local exhaust ventilation may be required.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. Keep calm. Seek immediate medical treatment.
  • Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with water, then with soap.
  • Eye contact: Hold eyes open and flood with water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical treatment if irritation persists.
  • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration. Seek immediate medical treatment.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, foodstuffs, heat, and ignition sources. Keep containers tightly closed and standing upright. Dispose of contents and containers according to local regulations.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation is crucial for effective bonding and sealing. This guide outlines general preparation for common surfaces and critical testing requirements.

General preparation for acceptable substrates

Acceptable substrates: Masonry, Brick, Metal, Timber, Most plastics, Stone, Painted surfaces, Rubber, Fibreglass, Porcelain, Aluminium, Powder coat.

Surface prep: Ensure surfaces are clean and free from loose material. Dampen a clean rag with Adheseal IPA Cleaner and wipe the material gently. Allow to dry completely. Use a cool blow dryer if needed to remove residual fibres.

Primer: Not required. Adheseal IPA Cleaner serves as a cleaning step prior to primer or sealant application.

Critical test: Always perform a preliminary test on an inconspicuous area of the substrate to confirm compatibility. Some materials, such as certain paints, wood finishes, or varnishes, may be damaged. Effects may not be immediately visible.
