For residential and commercial floor levelling, new construction, and remedial tiling jobs, Gripset C-Bed Cementitious Screed provides a rapid-hardening, shrinkage-compensated base that can be tiled over or waterproofed in 24 hours. Formulated with select aggregates and polymers, this engineered screed maintains high strength at low builds while resisting the water absorption that causes efflorescence in traditional sand and cement mixes.

How it works

Gripset C-Bed Cementitious Screed is a pre-blended, single-pack system that eliminates the consistency variations of on-site batching. The polymer-modified formulation is slump-free and dimensionally stable, allowing installers to build up ramp areas, grade falls to drains in insitu shower bases, or level uneven concrete floors from 5mm up to 200mm in thickness without cracking. It can be applied directly to prepared concrete, masonry, blockwork, and Gripset wet area membranes as either a bonded or unbonded system.

Numbers that matter

  • 5mm to 200mm thickness: The highly adaptable build range allows for thin bonded levelling repairs up to deep screeding and thick ramp installations.
  • 24-hour tiling and waterproofing window: Rapid-hardening chemistry allows the application of Gripset wet area membranes and ceramic tiles after 1 day (at 23°C and 50% RH), minimizing site downtime.
  • >40 MPa compressive strength (28 days): Provides high-strength load-bearing capacity suitable as an underlayment for demanding floor coverings, including parquetry, vinyl, carpet, and tiles.
  • ≥3 hours working time: An extended wet-edge window that gives installers ample time to place, pack, and screed falls before setting begins at 4 hours.
  • 0.1m² to 2m² coverage per 20kg bag: Delivers predictable yield calculations, yielding 2m² at 5mm thickness down to 0.1m² at 100mm thickness.

Where to use it

  • Underlayment for floor coverings such as carpet, ceramic tiles, vinyl, and parquetry.
  • Creating falls and ramps on concrete blocks, masonry, concrete, and Gripset wet area membranes.
  • Forming insitu shower bases with required falls to floor wastes.
  • Filling holes, voids, and repairing uneven concrete floors before applying levellers like Gripset C-Level.

Bonded vs unbonded installation

For bonded applications down to a 5mm minimum thickness, the screed must be laid over a primed surface. Apply a slurry primer consisting of 1 part Gripset 11Y latex bonding agent to 2 parts C-Bed (by volume) using a medium nap roller or soft bristle broom at 1mm wet film thickness. Place the screed mix directly onto the damp primer in a "wet-on-wet" application.

For unbonded applications at a 40mm minimum thickness, lay the screed over two layers of polyethylene plastic sheet acting as an isolating slip sheet, and incorporate galvanized metal reinforcement in accordance with AS 3958.

Limitations

  • Do not use over timber or metal substrates.
  • Do not use in fully immersed environments.
  • Do not apply when surface or ambient temperatures are below 5°C or above 30°C (note: technical properties table lists 35°C, but application temperature limits are capped at 30°C).
  • Do not hand mix or add excess water; require exactly 1.8L of clean water per 20kg bag mixed with a forced action, high-shear stirrer at approximately 600 rpm.
  • Do not use in areas subject to hydrostatic head of pressure unless the substrate is first treated with Gripset E60 moisture barrier.
  • Concrete substrates must be at least 14 days old before application.
  • Protect installed areas from direct sunlight and drying winds during the curing phase to prevent rapid water loss.

Frequently asked questions

Can Gripset C-Bed be applied over waterproofing membranes?

Yes, Gripset C-Bed is compatible with Gripset membranes once they are fully cured. This use case is for screed as a topping where the membrane is designed to receive trafficable finishes.

How soon can tiles be laid over Gripset C-Bed?

Tiling can generally proceed after 24-48 hours. The exact time depends on screed thickness and specific drying conditions on site. Always confirm surface hardness and moisture content before tiling.

Is Gripset C-Bed suitable for external screed applications?

Yes, C-Bed is suitable for external use. Its polymer modification makes it weather-resistant, ideal for balconies, terraces, and other outdoor tiled areas, provided it is applied over primed substrates or waterproofing membranes.

Do I need to add site additives or polymers?

No, Gripset C-Bed is a pre-blended, polymer-modified mortar. Only clean water should be added on site according to the mixing instructions, eliminating variability from separate polymer additions.

Applying Gripset C-Bed: Step-by-Step

  1. 1. Substrate Preparation

Ensure the substrate is clean, dry (unless using E60), and free from laitance, dust, grease, or curing agents. Prime as required with Gripset GP or E60 for enhanced bond strength.

  2. 2. Mixing

Mix Gripset C-Bed with clean potable water using a mechanical mixer. Add 3.5–4.0L of water per 20kg bag. Mix for 3–5 minutes until a consistent, semi-dry mix is achieved.

Pro Tip: Do not overwater. The correct mix should hold shape when formed by hand but remain workable for up to 60 minutes.
  3. 3. Placement & Screeding

Spread the mix onto the prepared substrate. Use screed rails, straight edges, or float tools to level and compact the material to desired thickness (10–100mm).

Pro Tip: Form falls to waste or drainage points as required. Allow for expansion joints over large areas.
  4. 4. Curing & Tiling

Allow Gripset C-Bed to cure for at least 24 hours before tiling. For bonded systems, confirm adequate surface hardness. Avoid over-watering or early exposure to rain.

  5. 5. Membrane or Adhesive Application

Apply waterproofing membrane or tile adhesive after verifying full screed cure. Prime again if screed is dusty or exposed for extended periods.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Use as a wearing surface. Gripset C-Bed must be tiled over or coated with an appropriate finish layer.
  • Not for: Application over flexible, soft, or movement-prone substrates such as particleboard or vinyl.
  • Avoid application: In temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C. Protect the screed from rain during the curing period to prevent wash-out or damage.
  • Thick applications: Screed beds over 100mm may require layered installation or reinforcement to manage shrinkage stress.

Safety and handling

Personal protective equipment

Wear appropriate gloves and safety goggles during mixing and application. Avoid direct skin contact with the wet mortar.

Ventilation

Use in well-ventilated areas to minimise dust inhalation. If dusty conditions are present, wear a P2 mask to protect against airborne particles.

First aid

  • Eyes: Flush immediately with clean water for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
  • Skin: Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Remove any contaminated clothing.
  • Inhaled: Move to fresh air. If symptoms develop, seek medical advice.
  • Swallowed: Rinse mouth. Do not induce vomiting. Contact medical services immediately.

Storage and disposal

Store Gripset C-Bed in a dry area, undercover, and elevated off concrete floors. Dispose of leftover material according to local environmental regulations. Do not wash product into stormwater drains.

Substrate guide

Correct surface preparation and priming are critical for the long-term performance of Gripset C-Bed screeds. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific details.

Concrete

Surface prep: Ensure concrete is fully cured (minimum 28 days), structurally sound, and free from dust, laitance, and contaminants. A mechanically prepared, open surface provides the best bond.

Primer: Required for bonded applications. Use Gripset GP or Gripset E60 depending on surface moisture. Dilute Gripset GP with water 2:1 for porous concrete surfaces.

Cement sheeting / Fibre cement

Surface prep: Secure sheets according to the manufacturer's guidelines. Remove all dust, laitance, and any surface coatings. Ensure the substrate is stable and dry.

Primer: Required. Apply Gripset GP primer undiluted to promote adhesion and consolidate the surface before screed application.

Waterproofing membranes

Surface prep: Ensure the waterproofing membrane is fully cured, clean, and free from release agents or contaminants. Do not install C-Bed over uncured or incompatible membranes.

Primer: Required. Apply Gripset GP or Gripset E60 over the cured membrane to achieve a direct bond with the screed. Confirm membrane compatibility with primer before application.

Tiled or sealed surfaces

Surface prep: Mechanically abrade or scabble the existing surface to remove any gloss or glaze. Clean thoroughly with a degreaser and rinse well to remove all residues.

Primer: Optional, but recommended. Use Gripset OP primer to improve adhesion over difficult or smooth non-porous substrates.
