For woodworking, cabinetry, shopfitting, and joinery applications requiring a water-resistant bond, Everbond PVA Xlink 3 is a single-component, self-crosslinking adhesive that conforms to AS 2754.2 1991 and EN204. It bonds all types of timber without staining, and cures under ambient or hot press conditions without requiring mixing.

How it works

Everbond PVA Xlink 3 is a synthetic resin adhesive that cures through water dissipation and crosslinking. Under ambient conditions, it cures to a firm, highly water-resistant bond. Full cure is optimised when the adhesive interphase reaches moisture equilibrium, which typically takes seven days depending on timber density, substrate and adhesive mass, moisture content, and ambient conditions.

For high-volume production, curing can be accelerated by hot pressing. Water resistance can be further increased by thermocuring after mixing Catalyst Number 1 at a rate of 1% w/w.

Numbers that matter

  • 8°C minimum application temperature: The lower thermal limit for the adhesive to form a proper bond during application.
  • 48% to 50% solids content: High polymer concentration ensuring high bond strength and controlled shrinkage during water dissipation.
  • 9,300 to 13,500 cP viscosity: A stable, medium-viscosity white liquid suitable for dowelling, assembly, and laminating.

Where to use it

This adhesive is suitable for assembly bonding, dowelling, laminating, and board joint or block bonding. Compatible substrates and materials include:

  • All timber species and solid timber
  • Particle board
  • Timber veneer
  • High-pressure laminates
  • Decorative papers

Press times and thermocuring

Minimum pressing times vary by application method and temperature:

  • Surface gluing of decorative papers: From 10 seconds
  • High frequency gluing (longitudinal heating): From 20 seconds
  • Surface gluing of high-pressure laminates (+70°C short-cycle presses): From 60 seconds
  • Assembly bonding: 30 minutes
  • Board joint and block bonding: 45 minutes

For veneering 1mm to 2mm timber veneer to solid timber or particle board (with timber moisture at 8% to 12%), the recommended thermocuring cycle is 30 seconds at 80°C followed by 30 seconds at 130°C. This requires an adhesive spread rate of 150 to 200 g/m² and a pressure of 4 to 5 kp/cm².

Application and limits

  • Adhesive coverage rates: Apply at 80 to 140 g/m² for surface bonding, and 160 to 180 g/m² for assembly bonding.
  • Preparation: Ensure the adhesive is completely homogenous before use.
  • Clean-up: Wash out brushes, rollers, and glue baths with water before the adhesive dries.
  • Storage limits: Store indoors under ambient conditions between 10°C and 30°C. Keep containers closed when not in use. Shelf life is 6 months in original packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Does Everbond PVA Xlink 3 suit kitchen and bathroom joinery?

Yes, it is rated water-resistant to AS 2754.2 and EN204, making it suitable for internal applications subject to incidental moisture. This provides reliability for cabinetry and shopfitting.

What timber moisture content is recommended for best results?

For optimal performance, especially with thermocuring, timber should have a moisture content between 8-12%. Consistent timber moisture helps achieve the strongest, most durable bond.

Can I use this glue for outdoor applications?

Everbond PVA Xlink 3 provides a very water-resistant bond suitable for internal joinery, not continuous outdoor exposure or situations requiring full waterproofing. It is designed for applications with incidental moisture exposure.

How fast does Everbond PVA Xlink 3 cure?

Pressing times vary from 10 seconds for decorative papers to 45 minutes for board joints under ambient conditions. Thermocuring significantly accelerates the process, achieving full strength in as little as 30 seconds for veneers.

Applying Everbond PVA Xlink 3: Protocols & Best Practices

General Application Steps:
  1. Preparation: Ensure all substrates are dry, clean, and dust-free. For assemblies, fit components within the open time of the adhesive.
  2. Application: Apply adhesive using roller, brush, or glue bath at the recommended spread rate. Use clamps or press systems to ensure full bond contact.
  3. Tooling & Finishing: Excess glue should be cleaned immediately with water before drying. Do not disturb during initial cure phase.
  4. Curing: Allow 30–45 minutes for initial set. For thermocuring, follow cycle: 30 sec @ 80°C + 30 sec @ 130°C.
Trade-Specific Scenario Guides:
For Cabinet Makers: Rapid High-Pressure Laminate Bonding

The Engineering Challenge: Efficient adhesion of HPL sheets without telegraphing or bubbling under short press cycles.

The System-Based Solution with Everbond PVA Xlink 3: Achieves full bond strength in 60 seconds under 70°C press conditions, ensuring flat, defect-free finishes.

Best Practice Note: Pre-condition laminates and panels to same temperature and humidity prior to pressing.

For Joiners: Assembly Bonding of Hardwood Frames

The Engineering Challenge: Slow clamp cycles with traditional adhesives reduce throughput.

The System-Based Solution with Everbond PVA Xlink 3: Sets in as little as 30 minutes at room temp, allowing removal of clamps and increased throughput.

Best Practice Note: Ensure adhesive wetting on both substrates and maintain even clamp pressure throughout joint.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Continuous outdoor exposure or applications requiring full waterproofing. This adhesive is rated for water resistance in internal environments.
  • Application temperature: Do not apply below 8°C.
  • Storage: Not for use beyond its 6-month shelf life in original packaging or if stored outside the 10°C to 30°C range.
  • Structural use: Not intended for primary structural bonding where specific engineering certifications are required.

Safety and handling
