Use Selsil Ultra Clear for: High-clarity sealing of glass and metal joints, mirror installations, splashback edges, facade trims, and wet area fixtures.

Selsil Ultra Clear: A Technical Overview

Selsil Ultra Clear is a next-generation hybrid sealant designed for precision sealing where visual clarity and long-term performance are critical. Formulated with silane-terminated polymer technology, it combines the elasticity of silicone with the strength of polyurethane — without the hazards of isocyanates or solvents. This professional-grade sealant cures bubble-free, adheres strongly to glass, aluminium, timber, and ceramics, and is perfectly suited to indoor and outdoor applications. With a 300% elongation rate and 1.9 MPa tensile strength, it provides flexibility in moving joints and lasting durability across Australia’s demanding climates.

Core Features & Specifications

  • Crystal-clear finish ideal for glass, mirror, and ceramic joints
  • Silane-terminated polymer base – solvent and isocyanate free
  • 300% elongation and 1.9 MPa tensile strength for dynamic joints
  • UV and chemical resistant – long-term durability in exposed areas
  • Non-sag formulation for clean vertical applications
  • Cures bubble-free and tack-free in approx. 35 minutes (at 25°C, 50% RH)
  • Transparent 290ml cartridge, 24 per carton – trade-pack ready

The Selsil Ultra Clear Advantage

  • Safe to use in residential kitchens and bathrooms – low VOC, no odour
  • Excellent for bonding dissimilar materials – timber to tile, glass to metal
  • Handles Australian climate extremes – -40°C to +90°C temperature range
  • Works in wet area environments but not suited to continuous immersion
  • 12-month shelf life – long storage reliability for project planning

Best Practices: Do's & Don'ts

Do

  • Apply on clean, dry, solid substrates like glass, metal, and ceramics
  • Use backing rod for deep joints to avoid three-point adhesion
  • Tool immediately with a putty knife before skin forms
  • Store between +5°C and +25°C to maintain product performance
  • Use in temperature conditions between +5°C and +35°C

Don't

  • Don't apply on bitumen, EPDM, HDPE, natural rubber, PE, or oily plastics
  • Avoid applying on wet, frozen, or continuously immersed surfaces
  • Don’t tool after skinning begins – it may compromise the finish
  • Avoid solvent or alcohol-based surface cleaners during curing
  • Do not paint until fully cured – test with paints beforehand

Frequently asked questions

Can Selsil Ultra Clear be used for bathroom mirror sealing?

Yes, Selsil Ultra Clear is suitable for bathroom mirror sealing. It is non-staining, adheres well to glass and painted surfaces, and offers resistance to moisture and chemicals. Avoid alcohol or solvent-based cleaners during the curing process.

What is the curing time for Selsil Ultra Clear?

Tack-free time is approximately 35 minutes at 25°C and 50% relative humidity. Full cure depends on joint size and ambient conditions, typically requiring 24–48 hours for complete through-curing. Plan for this window before placing the area into full service.

Is this sealant compatible with aluminium or stainless steel?

Selsil Ultra Clear bonds effectively to aluminium, stainless steel, and other metal surfaces. For best results, ensure all metal surfaces are clean and degreased. For critical metal-to-metal joints, consider using a metal primer.

What surfaces should Selsil Ultra Clear not be used on?

Do not use Selsil Ultra Clear on bituminous surfaces, EPDM, HDPE, natural rubber, PE, Teflon, or Delrin. These materials can compromise adhesion or cause issues with curing due to migrating plasticisers or oils.

Applying Selsil Ultra Clear: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. 1. Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be solid, clean, and dry. Remove dust, oil, loose materials, and contaminants. Use isopropyl alcohol or suitable cleaner depending on the substrate.

    Method A: Glass & Metal

Wipe with lint-free cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Avoid contact with bare hands post-cleaning.

Method B: Timber or Painted Surfaces

Ensure paint is fully cured. Lightly abrade glossy areas to enhance adhesion.

Timing: Complete cleaning just before application to avoid recontamination.
Pro Tip: Always wear gloves when handling prepped surfaces to prevent adhesion failure.
  2. 2. Application

Cut nozzle to desired bead width and apply sealant in a steady, continuous bead. Apply with a standard caulking gun.

    Joint Filling

    Use a 5mm x 5mm bead as a minimum. Joint width should be twice the depth (e.g., 10mm wide x 5mm deep).

    Adhesive Dots

For mirror or panel fixing, apply spaced adhesive dots at 10cm intervals.

Timing: Tool within 5–10 minutes before skin forms. Tack-free in ~35 minutes at 25°C.
Pro Tip: Always work in one direction and avoid stopping mid-joint to ensure clean lines.
  3. 3. Tooling & Finishing

Tool the sealant immediately after application using a dry spatula or tool. Remove excess with a clean cloth.

Timing: Must be tooled before skin forms. Do not attempt to rework after surface curing begins.
Pro Tip: Use masking tape to achieve clean edges. Remove tape immediately after tooling.
  4. 4. Curing & Cleanup

Allow the sealant to fully cure before exposure to water or movement. Clean tools and surfaces with solvent before curing. Cured material can only be removed mechanically.

Timing: Cure time varies by bead thickness. Typically 2–3mm per 24 hours at 25°C, 50% RH.
Pro Tip: Avoid exposure to alcohol-based cleaners during cure — it may inhibit adhesion.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Continuous water immersion applications, such as pools or ponds.
  • Not for: Bituminous substrates or oily surfaces that bleed plasticisers or solvents.
  • Not for: Use on PE, HDPE, EPDM, Teflon, Delrin, or natural rubber, as these materials can affect curing or bonding.
  • Avoid: Applying on wet, frozen, or contaminated surfaces.
  • Note: Do not overpaint until the product is fully cured. Test paint compatibility beforehand, as certain paints may affect adhesion or the cured sealant.

Safety and handling

Personal protective equipment

Wear chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles. Avoid prolonged skin and eye contact during handling.

Ventilation

Ensure adequate ventilation during application, especially when working in confined indoor spaces, to minimise exposure to vapours.

First aid

  • Eyes: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 10–15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
  • Skin: Wipe off excess material immediately. Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing.
  • Inhaled: Move to fresh air. If breathing is difficult or irritation occurs, seek medical help.
  • Swallowed: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water. Seek medical attention immediately.

Seek medical attention immediately in all cases of serious exposure.

Storage and disposal

Store in original unopened packaging between 5°C and 25°C. Keep away from heat sources. Dispose of product and packaging according to local regulations.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation and priming are critical for reliable adhesion and long-term performance.

Glass

Surface prep: Ensure glass is clean, dry, and free from grease or soap residues. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol using a lint-free cloth.

Primer: Not required. Direct adhesion is effective when the surface is dry and within the application temperature range.

Aluminium (anodised or mill finish)

Surface prep: Remove surface oxidation with a Scotch-Brite pad, then clean with an alcohol-based cleaner. Ensure no oil residues remain.

Primer: Optional. For critical joints or structural assemblies, Selsil MetalBond Primer is recommended to enhance adhesion.

Ceramic tile (glazed)

Surface prep: Ensure tiles are clean, dry, and free of soap, mould, and grout dust. Use diluted vinegar if necessary to remove stubborn residues.

Primer: Not required. Selsil Ultra Clear bonds reliably to glazed surfaces without primer.

Timber (painted or sealed)

Surface prep: Ensure painted surfaces are fully cured (minimum 7 days) and clean. Lightly abrade gloss finishes to improve mechanical grip.

Primer: Optional. Test adhesion on a small area. If adhesion is poor, use a compatible timber primer for best results.

Plastic (PVC, acrylic, ABS)

Surface prep: Wipe with a plastic cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Roughen glossy surfaces with fine sandpaper to improve grip.

Primer: Required for critical bonding. Use a specialty plastic primer like PlasticPrep 1200 compatible with the specific plastic type.
