Gripset C-Rubber Tile Adhesive

C2TES1 classified, rubber-modified tile adhesive that handles porcelain, vitrified and natural stone in both internal and external wet areas. Tensile adhesion stays at ≥1 MPa after water immersion and freeze/thaw, so it won't let go when the substrate moves. 30-minute open time gives you room to adjust larger formats without rushing. Not for structural bonding or substrates with ongoing movement beyond S1 classification. Check the TDS for specific substrate prep requirements before you start.

When a tiling project demands both flexibility and robust adhesion, particularly in demanding internal or external areas, getting the right adhesive is critical. Gripset C-Rubber delivers the C2TES1 classification required for high-performance tiling, ensuring tiles stay fixed through temperature shifts and moisture exposure. It handles porcelain, vitrified, and natural stone tiles with consistent bond strength, offering peace of mind where flexibility and durability are non-negotiable.

Why this product exists

Gripset C-Rubber is formulated as a flexible, rubber-modified tile adhesive that meets C2TES1 standards. It provides a high-performance solution for a wide range of tiling applications, from general floor and wall installations to internal and external wet areas. This adhesive offers strong adhesion across various tile types and substrates, ensuring a durable, long-lasting finish.

Its respirable silica free formulation also supports safer working conditions on site without compromising performance.

The numbers that matter

Gripset C-Rubber achieves a C2TES1 classification under ISO 13007. This means it offers enhanced cementitious adhesion (C2), extended open time (E), excellent slip resistance (T), and flexibility (S1). These properties ensure tiles remain securely bonded in demanding conditions, including those subject to thermal expansion and contraction or heavy foot traffic.

The adhesive maintains a tensile adhesion strength of ≥1 MPa after dry cure, water immersion, and freeze/thaw cycles. This consistent strength guarantees durability whether tiles are installed outdoors, in wet areas, or in environments prone to temperature fluctuations. A 30-minute open time and 40-minute adjustment time provide adequate flexibility for precise tile placement, especially for larger formats, without rushing the process or compromising bond integrity.

What it's like to use

Mixing Gripset C-Rubber is straightforward: add a 20kg bag to 8 litres of clean water, then stir until smooth. Allow a 3-minute stand time, then re-stir before use. Apply the adhesive to the substrate using a notched trowel suitable for the tile size, working in 1m² sections to prevent skinning.

  • For large format tiles: Back-buttering the tiles in addition to notching the floor ensures maximum coverage and reduces voiding.
  • For clip systems: Use a 12, 15 or 20mm notch and back-butter the tile to achieve standard-compliant coverage.
  • Clean up: Wet adhesive can be cleaned from tiles with a damp cloth or sponge. Tools are cleaned with water while the adhesive is still wet.

Allow 24 hours for curing before grouting or light foot traffic, and 3-4 days before exposing wet areas to service. Drying times may extend in cooler, more humid conditions.

Where this product excels

Gripset C-Rubber excels in diverse tiling scenarios where durability and flexibility are paramount:

  • Internal and external wall and floor tiling: Its C2TES1 classification makes it suitable for demanding areas, from residential living spaces to commercial walkways, resisting environmental stressors.
  • Wet areas: Provides reliable adhesion in bathrooms, laundries, and showers, ensuring tiles remain secure in consistently damp conditions.
  • Low-porosity tiles: Effectively bonds porcelain, ceramic, and vitrified tiles, which often challenge less robust adhesives. It also suits non-moisture sensitive natural stone.
  • Green screeds and renders: This adhesive can be applied to screeded and rendered surfaces after just 24 hours of curing, helping accelerate project timelines.

How it fits in a real system

Gripset C-Rubber forms a critical final step in many tiling systems. It is commonly used directly over Gripset waterproofing membranes, ensuring a seamless and compliant build-up from substrate to finished tile. For optimal adhesion, highly porous surfaces should be primed with Gripset GP Primer, while non-porous surfaces benefit from Gripset OP Primer before adhesive application, ensuring maximum bond strength.

Choose this when

  • When undertaking general floor and wall tiling projects, both internally and externally, where a high-performance C2TES1 adhesive is required.
  • For tiling wet areas like bathrooms, laundries, and showers, demanding resilient adhesion against moisture.
  • When fixing porcelain, ceramic, vitrified tiles, mosaics, or non-moisture sensitive natural stone to various prepared substrates.
  • When a flexible, economical, and respirable silica free tile adhesive is needed for robust, long-term installations.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Fixing tiles directly onto timber floors due to potential movement issues.
  • Not for: Moisture-sensitive natural stone, which requires specific moisture-resistant adhesives.
  • Not for: Immersed applications such as pools or spas, which demand fully immersed-rated adhesives.
  • Not for: Temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C during application.

Gripset C-Rubber's C2TES1 classification means it meets the highest standards for cementitious tile adhesives. This classification confirms its superior adhesion strength (C2), extended open time (E), improved slip resistance (T), and deformability (S1), providing assurance of performance and durability in varied conditions.

Applying Gripset C-Rubber: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Substrates must be clean, sound, and flat. Remove dust, laitance, oils/grease, curing compounds and loose/weak material. Ensure concrete ≥7 days cure, wood-float finish, and ≥20 MPa compressive strength.

    Porous / Absorbent Surfaces

Prime with Gripset GP Primer at ~1 L/8–10 m². Allow to dry per primer TDS. For green screeds/renders (≥24 h), ensure surface is firm and free of surface water.

    Dense / Non-Porous Surfaces

Mechanically abrade steel-trowelled/burnished concrete or existing tiles (remove ≥80% glaze). Alternatively, prime with Gripset OP Primer at ~1 L/12 m².

Timing: Complete prep immediately before mixing to avoid re-contamination.
Pro Tip: Respect movement joints per AS 3958.1 — never bridge with adhesive.
  2. Mixing

Use clean water and a mechanical mixer with paddle to achieve a smooth, lump-free paste. Always add powder to water.

    Standard Batch

Add 8 L water per 20 kg bag while mixing (≤500 rpm) until homogeneous.

    Small Batch

Scale at ~0.4 L per kg of powder. Maintain the same mixing procedure.

Timing: Mix, then stand for ~3 minutes and re-stir lightly before use. Pot life ~1 hour @ 23 °C, 50% RH.
Pro Tip: Do not re-temper with extra water once mixed — it weakens the bond.
  3. Trowelling & Tile Placement

Apply only as much adhesive as can be tiled within the open time. Press tiles into a full wet bed using a sliding action; check coverage by lifting a tile.

    Standard Tiles ≤300 × 300 mm

Use an appropriate notch (e.g., 10 mm). Aim for ≥90% coverage (internal dry) or ≥95% (wet/external). Final bed thickness: ≥2 mm walls, ≥3 mm floors.

    Large-Format / Clip Systems

Use 12, 15 or 20 mm notch and back-butter. Maintain ≥95% coverage; do not spot-fix.

Timing: Open time ~30 minutes; adjustment time ~40 minutes @ 23 °C, 50% RH. If skinning occurs, remove and re-apply fresh adhesive.
Pro Tip: Periodically lift tiles to verify ridge collapse and contact — especially with porcelain.
  4. Curing & Grouting

Protect freshly tiled areas from traffic, rain and vibration until initial set. Clean any adhesive in joints before grouting.

    Normal Conditions

Grout after ~24 hours. Light foot traffic after ~24 hours. Wet-area service after ~3–4 days.

    Cool / Humid Conditions

Allow extended times before grouting and service. Do not disturb for longer than 24 hours if temperatures are low or humidity is high.

Timing: Times quoted are @ 23 °C, 50% RH and will vary with site conditions.
Pro Tip: Keep tiling covered from wind and direct sun to maintain open time and workability.
  5. Clean Up

Remove residue before it hardens; clean equipment promptly.

    While Wet

Wipe tile faces with a damp sponge/cloth. Rinse frequently to avoid film.

    When Cured

Remove mechanically. Do not use solvents.

Timing: Clean as you go — within the adhesive’s open time.
Pro Tip: Keep joints free of adhesive to speed up grouting and avoid staining.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Immersed applications such as pools or spas, due to specific performance requirements beyond the product's scope.
  • Not for: Direct fixing tiles onto timber floors; specific timber-compatible systems are required.
  • Not for: Moisture-sensitive natural stone, as the product is cement-based and may cause discolouration.
  • Application temperature: Do not apply when surface or ambient temperatures are below 5°C or above 35°C, to ensure proper cure and bond development.
  • Application method: Do not spot fix tiles; a full wet bed is required to ensure complete coverage and prevent voids under the tile.
