Achieving perfectly flat, durable floors, indoors or out, starts with the right base. TruLevel TuffTop creates smooth, high-strength surfaces from 3mm to 30mm, preparing new or existing concrete for any floor finish. It’s ready for most floor coverings in as little as 18 hours, providing a reliable foundation even over compatible liquid waterproofing membranes. No more uneven installations or premature wear from an inadequately prepared slab.

Why this product exists

TruLevel TuffTop exists to provide a high-performance solution for levelling concrete floors. It establishes a smooth, even, and highly mechanically resistant surface, preparing substrates from 3mm to 30mm thick for diverse floor coverings. Formulated for both internal and external applications, it ensures a durable foundation for everything from vinyl and timber to tiles and epoxy coatings in commercial, industrial, and domestic settings.

The numbers that matter

TruLevel TuffTop levels floors from a fine 3mm up to a substantial 30mm in a single application, accommodating significant substrate variations. Its rapid-drying formula allows foot traffic in 3 to 4 hours, significantly reducing project downtime. With a 28-day compressive strength exceeding 40 N/mm², it delivers robust support for heavy loads and high-traffic areas, ensuring a durable base for the finished floor.

What it's like to use

Preparation is key. Substrates must be dry, sound, and clean, often requiring mechanical preparation like shot blasting or diamond grinding to achieve an open, porous surface. Always prime with RLA Universal Primer, diluting for porous substrates or applying neat for non-porous surfaces like liquid waterproofing membranes. Mix 3.8 to 4.0 litres of clean water with each 20kg bag, ensuring a lump-free consistency after three minutes of low-speed mixing. It must be poured immediately after mixing, within five minutes, to ensure continuous flow and optimal self-levelling. Clean tools immediately with water; never pour waste down drains.

Where this product excels

TruLevel TuffTop excels in critical internal and external applications. It is specified for creating smooth, durable bases on concrete roofs that are to be tiled or membrane-covered, or for levelling plant rooms and other commercial internal areas requiring high mechanical resistance. Its properties make it an ideal skim coat for preparing substrates for vinyl sheeting or synthetic turf adhesion, and it is suitable for floors with underfloor heating systems and areas subject to constant wheelchair traffic.

How it fits in a real system

This self-levelling compound often functions as a critical intermediate layer in high-performance flooring systems. It is commonly specified after the application of a waterproofing primer, such as Gripset 2P, or over a liquid waterproofing membrane like Adheseal Everflex WPM. Its role is to provide a final smooth, level, and mechanically robust substrate before the installation of floor coverings or epoxy topcoats like Megapoxy 132. This positioning ensures a seamless transition and enhanced durability for the entire flooring assembly.

Choose this when

  • Levelling significant irregularities: When concrete substrates require levelling from 3mm to 30mm, both internally and externally.
  • Rapid project turnaround: When subsequent floor coverings need to be installed in as little as 18 to 24 hours.
  • High mechanical resistance: For areas requiring durability against heavy loads, wheelchair traffic, or where a hard-wearing underlay is essential.
  • Overlaying waterproofing: When levelling over compatible liquid waterproofing membranes or preparing concrete roofs and plant room floors.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Substrates exhibiting rising dampness; this compound is not a moisture barrier.
  • Not for: Application over active expansion joints, as reflective cracking may occur.
  • Not for: Primary structural elements or deep structural build-ups exceeding 30mm without specific consultation.
  • Not for: Use as a standalone waterproofing membrane; it is designed to be applied over compatible membranes.

TruLevel TuffTop is classified as CT-C40-F8 according to EN 13813. This classification confirms its suitability as a cementitious screed (CT) with a compressive strength of C40 (40 N/mm²) and a flexural strength of F8 (8 N/mm²), indicating its high mechanical performance for heavy-duty applications.

Applying RLA TruLevel TuffTop: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

All substrates must be clean, dry, sound, and compliant with Australian Standards. Remove all contaminants including oils, wax, curing compounds, and adhesive residues.

    Porous Substrates

Dilute RLA Universal Primer 1:2 with clean water. Apply one or two coats as needed. Allow to dry tack-free.

    Non-Porous Substrates

Mechanically abrade if necessary. Apply neat RLA Universal Primer. Let dry completely before proceeding.

Timing: Primer should dry to a clear, tack-free film (approx. 2 hours at 23°C).
Pro Tip: Always test moisture levels before application. Use RLA Moisture Seal if levels exceed specification.
  2. Mixing

Mix 20kg of RLA TruLevel TuffTop with 3.8–4.0L of clean water using a low-speed mechanical mixer. Add powder to water slowly.

    Drill and Paddle Method

Mix for 3 minutes to achieve a lump-free consistency. Avoid overwatering to maintain strength.

    Pump Mixing

For large areas, use a continuous mixing pump suited to self-levelling compounds.

Timing: Use within 5 minutes of mixing at 23°C. Plan for uninterrupted application.
Pro Tip: Keep backup mixes ready for large surfaces to maintain wet edge and flow.
  3. Application

Pour or pump the compound onto the primed substrate. Spread evenly using a gauge rake, screed bar, or trowel to required thickness.

    Manual Spreading

Use a stand-up spreader or trowel to move product quickly. Maintain continuous wet edge for large areas.

    Pumping

Use suitable pumping equipment for areas over 50m². Ensure team coordination to avoid material setting mid-flow.

Timing: Application must be completed within open time of 30 minutes at 23°C.

Substrate guide

Proper substrate preparation and priming are critical for the bond strength and performance of any levelling compound.

Concrete substrates

Surface prep: Substrates must be dry, sound, and clean, free of wax, grease, oil, old adhesive, or curing compounds. Mechanically prepare the surface by shot blasting or diamond grinding to achieve a roughened, porous profile. Thoroughly vacuum all loose material and dust. The subfloor temperature must be at least 10°C. Do not use solvents or acid etching. For high moisture, apply RLA Moisture Seal beforehand.

Primer: Required. Use RLA Universal Primer. For porous concrete, mix one part primer with two parts clean water. For non-porous concrete (e.g., burnished), apply RLA Universal Primer neat. Allow primer to dry to a tack-free, transparent film (approx. 2 hours at 23°C) before applying TruLevel TuffTop.

Ceramic tiles, Burnished concrete, Liquid waterproofing membranes

Surface prep: These are non-porous surfaces. Mechanically remove any existing coatings or sealing compounds. A light grind or sand is recommended to enhance adhesion on extremely non-porous substrates. Ensure the surface is clean and dry.

Primer: Required. Apply RLA Universal Primer neat (undiluted). Allow primer to dry until it forms a tack-free, transparent film (approx. 2 hours at 23°C) before proceeding with TruLevel TuffTop application.
