SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant

One-part neutral cure silicone with anti-fungicide built in, so the shower seal actually stays clean instead of going black in six months. Handles ±25% joint movement and bonds to glass, ceramics and aluminium without cracking, even in hot, humid conditions. Not for structural glazing or submerged joints. Check the substrate first, but for wet areas that stay wet, this is the one that holds up.

Got mouldy silicone in your shower? The unsightly black lines are not just a cosmetic issue; they indicate a breeding ground for mildew in hot, humid conditions. SA Sanitary Silicone Sealant is formulated to prevent this, ensuring a clean, hygienic, and long-lasting seal in the most demanding wet environments. Achieve a professional finish that stays clean and bright.

Why this product exists

Many standard silicones struggle in persistently wet, humid environments, leading to rapid mould and mildew growth. SA Sanitary was specifically formulated to combat this. It is a one-part, neutral curing silicone sealant containing an anti-fungicide, designed to resist mildew when exposed to the prolonged hot and humid conditions typical of kitchens, bathrooms, and shower areas. Unlike general-purpose sealants, it maintains its integrity and appearance, preventing the unhygienic black mould that compromises both aesthetics and hygiene.

The numbers that matter

Achieving a reliable seal in wet areas means managing movement, temperature, and bond strength:

  • Dynamic Joint Movement of ±25%: This flexibility is crucial for joints exposed to temperature fluctuations, such as those around shower screens or in sun-exposed glazing. The sealant can expand and contract without cracking, maintaining a watertight seal.
  • Operating Temperature from -62°C to 180°C: From scorching hot showers to external weatherproofing, this broad range ensures the sealant remains stable, flexible, and fully functional without degrading or losing adhesion.
  • Tensile Strength of 1.7 MPa: This indicates a strong, durable bond. Once cured, the sealant resists tearing and pulls, ensuring it stays adhered to surfaces like glass, ceramics, and aluminium, even under stress.
  • Hardness of 28 Shore A: This Shore A rating signifies a sealant that is firm yet flexible enough to accommodate movement without being overly soft or prone to damage from cleaning, making it ideal for high-traffic wet areas.

What it's like to use

SA Sanitary applies smoothly and tools easily to achieve a clean finish. Start by ensuring all surfaces are clean, dry, and free of contaminants like dirt, grease, or oil. Use white spirits or mechanical cleaning. When replacing old sealant, completely remove all existing material. Apply the sealant using a gun, tooling the bead within 5-10 minutes of application, before skin formation. For neat edges, use masking tape and remove it before the sealant skins. For joints deeper than 10mm, control sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion by using a compatible backer rod, such as the Adheseal backer rod range. Uncured sealant can be cleaned with Adheseal Mineral Turpentine Solvent.

Where this product excels

This sealant is engineered for environments where both aesthetics and long-term hygiene are critical:

  • Bathroom and Shower Areas: Specifically designed to resist mildew growth in the hot, humid conditions of showers, baths, and vanity surrounds, keeping joints clean and free from black mould.
  • Kitchens and Laundries: Provides durable, hygienic seals around sinks, benchtops, and splashbacks, where moisture and cleaning are constant factors.
  • Glazing Applications: Its excellent adhesion to glass and aluminium, coupled with UV resistance, makes it suitable for general glazing work, including shower screens.
  • Exterior Weatherproofing: The outstanding weatherability and broad operating temperature range ensure reliable performance for exterior sealing where UV exposure and temperature extremes are a concern.

Choose this when

  • When sealing joints in bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, or any area prone to persistent humidity and moisture.
  • When you need a silicone sealant with built-in anti-fungicide to prevent mould and mildew growth.
  • When seeking a neutral cure silicone that adheres well to a wide range of common building materials, including glass, ceramics, metals, and masonry.
  • When UV stability and excellent weather resistance are required for both interior and exterior applications.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Submerged joints where porous substrates might allow water to reach the bond interface.
  • Not for: Applications on certain rubber products where plasticiser bleed could occur, affecting sealant performance.
  • Not for: Horizontal walkways or areas subject to heavy abrasion, as the sealant is not designed for wear resistance.
  • Not for: Situations requiring a paintable finish; paint will not adhere to silicone.
  • Not for: Use on polycarbonate plastics. Test suitability on other plastic types before full application.

5 Star VOC Compliant: This product meets stringent Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions standards, contributing to healthier indoor air quality in occupied spaces.
