When unsealed gaps become pathways for noise, dust, and temperature fluctuations, the solution needs to be fast and expansive. RLA Foam Filler delivers a high-volume, airtight seal that transforms cold, draughty cavities into insulated, quiet spaces. It's the right fit for sealing large voids and achieving immediate environmental control.

Why this product exists

This high-expanding, fast-curing polyurethane foam is specifically designed to tackle gaps, joints, and cavities that static fillers cannot adequately address. It creates an airtight, moisture-resistant barrier that significantly reduces noise intrusion, cold air, dust, and draughts in a single application. Unlike traditional fillers, RLA Foam Filler offers dynamic, high-volume expansion to fill large and irregular voids, providing multi-functional benefits like insulation, noise reduction, and an airtight seal with rapid curing.

The numbers that matter

  • Expands up to 45 times: This extreme expansion volume allows a single can to fill significant voids, making it efficient for large gaps and irregular cavities where other methods would require multiple products or applications.
  • Skins in 15-30 minutes, full cure in 24 hours: The rapid skin time allows for quick subsequent work or adjustments, while the 24-hour full cure ensures the foam achieves its maximum structural integrity and sealing properties promptly, minimising project delays.
  • Temperature resistant from -40°C to 80°C: This wide operating range means the cured foam maintains its insulating and sealing performance in Australia's varied climate extremes, from freezing conditions to intense summer heat.
  • Water absorption 1% by volume: A low water absorption rate ensures the foam provides a reliable moisture-resistant seal, preventing dampness and associated issues in the filled cavities.
  • Ozone-friendly: Formulated without propellant gases, this product supports environmental responsibility without compromising performance.

What it's like to use

Before application, ensure surfaces are clean and free from loose debris. Lightly dampen the area with water; this significantly improves adhesion and accelerates the curing process. Shake the can thoroughly, then attach the application tube. Invert the can and apply pressure to the trigger, filling cavities to approximately one-third capacity to allow for full expansion. For larger voids, apply in stages, allowing each layer to skin before adding more. Uncured foam cleans easily from non-porous surfaces with a solvent-moistened cloth. If spilt on textiles, allow it to fully cure before mechanical removal.

Where this product excels

RLA Foam Filler delivers robust performance across diverse construction and renovation tasks where effective sealing and insulation are critical:

  • Glazing and Joinery: For fixing and insulating door and window frames, creating an airtight seal against thermal transfer and external noise.
  • Masonry and Building Penetrations: Ideal for filling and sealing gaps, joints, and cavities in brickwork, concrete, and plasterboard, including penetrations for services.
  • Plumbing and Electrical: Provides insulation for water pipes and electrical outlets, helping to reduce condensation, noise, and draughts around service entries.
  • General Sealing: Effectively seals various building surfaces including timber, galvanised steel, aluminium, and compressed cement-sheet, preventing dust, draughts, and pest ingress.

Choose this when

  • When needing to create an airtight, moisture-resistant seal in gaps, joints, or cavities.
  • When insulating door and window frames to enhance thermal and acoustic performance.
  • When filling large or irregular voids efficiently with a high-expanding material.
  • When seeking to reduce noise, cold, dust, or draughts in interior or exterior applications.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Areas subject to foot or vehicular traffic, as the foam is not designed for load-bearing applications.
  • Not for: Immersed environments or constant water exposure.
  • Not for: Structural load-bearing applications; it provides insulation and sealing, not structural support.
  • UV exposure: Cured foam will discolour when exposed to ultraviolet light. For outdoor use, paint or coat the foam to protect its appearance and longevity.
  • Temperature: Do not apply when surface or ambient temperatures are below 5°C or above 30°C, as this can affect yield and curing times.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint over cured RLA Foam Filler?

Yes, once fully cured, foam can be cut, sanded, and painted. For outdoor use, painting or coating is essential to protect the foam from UV degradation and discolouration.

How much foam should fill a cavity?

Only fill cavities to approximately one-third of the space. RLA Foam Filler expands significantly, up to 45 times its original size, so under-filling prevents excessive pressure that could distort window frames or other substrates.

Can curing time be accelerated?

Yes, RLA Foam Filler is moisture-cured. Lightly misting surfaces with water before application and lightly misting the applied foam can accelerate curing, especially in dry, low-humidity conditions.

What is the best way to clean uncured foam?

For non-porous surfaces, wipe uncured foam immediately with a solvent-moistened cloth. If it gets on textiles, allow it to fully cure then remove mechanically by cutting or scraping.

Applying RLA Foam Filler: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface & Can Preparation

Proper preparation is key to achieving maximum yield and adhesion. Ensure all surfaces are correctly prepared before starting.

    Surface Cleaning

Surfaces must be clean and free from all loose material, dust, oil, and grease. Cover and protect surrounding areas to prevent contact with the foam.

    Can Activation

Ensure the can is at room temperature (at least 12 hours). Shake the can vigorously 15-20 times to thoroughly mix the contents before screwing on the application tube and trigger.

Pro Tip: Lightly mist the substrate with water just before applying the foam. This provides the necessary moisture to accelerate the cure and improve adhesion, especially in dry climates.
  2. Application Technique

Apply the foam in a controlled manner to achieve a complete fill without causing damage from over-expansion.

    Applying the Foam

Invert the can and direct the tube into the cavity. Apply steady pressure to the trigger. Fill the cavity to approximately one-third (33%) of the space to allow for expansion.

    Layering for Large Voids

For larger or deeper cavities, apply the foam in stages or layers. This allows each layer to cure properly and ensures a consistent fill throughout the void.

Timing: The foam will form a tack-free skin in 15-30 minutes under normal conditions (23°C and 50% RH).
  3. Curing & Finishing

Once the foam has cured, it can be finished to create a clean, professional appearance.

    Finishing

After approximately 8 hours, excess foam can be trimmed with a sharp knife. The surface can then be sanded smooth and painted to match the surrounding area.

Timing: Allow 24 hours for the foam to achieve full cure and maximum expansion. Colder conditions will extend these times.
Pro Tip: For outdoor applications, always coat or paint the cured foam. This protects it from UV light, preventing discolouration and ensuring long-term durability.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Applications below 5°C or above 30°C surface/ambient temperature, as this impacts yield and cure time.
  • Not for: Areas subject to foot or vehicular traffic.
  • Not for: Use as a load-bearing material. This foam is for filling and sealing, not structural support.
  • Not for: Continuous water immersion or applications below the waterline.
  • Not for: Direct, unprotected exposure to UV light in outdoor applications, as cured foam will discolour and degrade. Always paint or coat for external use.

Safety and handling

RLA Foam Filler is an extremely flammable aerosol. Keep away from ignition sources. Do not pierce or burn cans.

Personal protective equipment

Always wear protective gloves, overalls, and chemical goggles or a face shield. Respiratory protection is mandatory where ventilation is inadequate due to isocyanate content.

Ventilation

Use outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. If working indoors, ensure local exhaust ventilation is sufficient to maintain air concentrations below exposure standards.

First aid

  • Eyes: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing for at least 15 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Skin: Immediately remove all contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with plenty of soap and water. If irritation or a rash occurs, get medical advice.
  • Inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a comfortable position. If respiratory symptoms (allergy, asthma, or breathing difficulties) occur, call a POISON CENTRE or doctor immediately.
  • Swallowed: Rinse mouth with water. Give a glass of water to drink. DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Protect from sunlight and do not expose to temperatures exceeding 50°C. Store cans upright in a cool, dry place. Product has a shelf life of 12 months. Dispose of contents and container according to local regulations.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal adhesion and performance across various building materials.

Porous substrates (Timber, Brick, Concrete)

Surface prep: Ensure surfaces are clean, structurally sound, and free from dust, oil, grease, and loose material. Lightly dampen the substrate with a water mist immediately prior to foam application to improve adhesion and accelerate curing.

Primer: Not required. For standard applications on sound surfaces, proper cleaning and pre-dampening are sufficient for excellent adhesion.

Non-porous substrates (Metals, Glass, Cement Sheet)

Surface prep: Surfaces such as galvanised steel, aluminium, glass, and compressed cement sheet must be clean and free from contaminants. Lightly dampen the surface with a fine water spray to promote the moisture-curing reaction.

Primer: Not required. Adhesion to clean, non-porous surfaces is excellent without a primer. Ensure all oils or residues are thoroughly removed before pre-dampening and application.
