For installations that demand a bond fixed in place, not just held. Kerapoxy Adhesive delivers rigid, R2T classified bonding for ceramic and stone, internally and externally. This two-component epoxy adhesive ensures tiles stay where they are laid, even against chemical agents, humidity, and thermal shock. It's the assurance of a permanent fix in high-performance environments.

Why this product exists

Kerapoxy Adhesive was formulated by MAPEI to provide a high-strength, non-slip, and chemically resistant bonding solution for critical tile and stone installations. As a two-component, epoxy resin-based mortar, it hardens through a chemical reaction without shrinkage. This results in an extremely strong, durable bond that resists ageing, humidity, solvents, oils, acids, and alkalis, a necessary safeguard in demanding commercial and industrial settings.

The numbers that matter

The R2T classification (EN 12004) confirms Kerapoxy Adhesive as an improved, reactive adhesive with no vertical slip. This means once a tile is set, it stays precisely where positioned, even large format or heavy pieces on vertical surfaces. A pot life of 45 minutes at +23°C provides a controlled working window, while its 2-day readiness for service ensures the installation can handle its intended load quickly. Impressively, it maintains a bond shear strength of 4 N/mm² after water immersion and thermal shock, validating its performance in wet and temperature-fluctuating environments.

What it's like to use

Kerapoxy Adhesive is supplied in pre-dosed kits, eliminating common mixing ratio errors. Pour the Part B catalyst into Part A and mix thoroughly with a low-speed electric mixer until a smooth, thixotropic paste forms. This mixing method prevents overheating and ensures optimal bond strength. Apply the adhesive with a suitable notched trowel, ensuring full buttering, especially for special tile shapes. Clean tools and excess material with water while fresh. Once cured, mechanical removal or Pulicol 2000 is required.

Where this product excels

  • Commercial Kitchens and Laundries: Its excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, solvents, and oils makes it ideal for bonding tiles in areas exposed to harsh cleaning chemicals and spills.
  • Fibreglass Swimming Pools: Kerapoxy Adhesive provides a reliable, durable bond for tiles in continually immersed conditions, ensuring longevity and preventing delamination.
  • External Stone and Ceramic Installations: For marble doorsteps, windowsills, and other external applications, its resistance to ageing and humidity ensures the bond endures harsh weather conditions.
  • Heavy Traffic Areas: The high bond strength and durability make it suitable for floors and walls in commercial spaces subject to heavy foot traffic, maintaining integrity over time.

How it fits in a real system

Kerapoxy Adhesive serves as the rigid bonding layer for ceramic and stone within demanding tiling systems. While many projects use cementitious adhesives, Kerapoxy Adhesive is specified when superior chemical resistance, zero vertical slip, and extreme durability are non-negotiable. For instance, in a commercial fit-out, a general-purpose adhesive like Keraflex Maxi S1 might be used for standard areas, but Kerapoxy Adhesive is the choice for critical zones such as chemical wash-down areas or external feature tiling. Substrates must be cured, mechanically strong, and dry; for cementitious substrates, ensure a minimum of one week of curing per centimetre thickness. For ferrous surfaces, sand-blasting to remove rust is mandatory.

Choose this when

  • When bonding ceramic, porcelain, or stone to floors and walls, internally or externally.
  • When the installation requires an R2T classified adhesive with no vertical slip and superior bond strength.
  • When excellent durability and resistance to ageing, humidity, solvents, oils, acids, and alkalis are essential.
  • When working with special tile shapes or in conditions like fibreglass swimming pools, where a rigid, chemical-resistant bond is paramount.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Sealing flexible joints or areas subject to movement. For such applications, use Mapei solutions like Mapesil AC or Mapeflex PU21.
  • Not for: Wet, dirty, or crumbly surfaces, as adhesion will be compromised.
  • Not for: Application outside the temperature range of +10°C to +30°C.
  • Not for: Altering the mix ratio with water or solvents; this will prevent proper hardening.

Kerapoxy Adhesive is R2T classified under EN 12004, signifying it as an improved (2), reactive (R) adhesive with no vertical slip (T). This classification provides a verifiable standard for its high-performance characteristics in demanding tile and stone bonding applications.

Kerapoxy Adhesive vs. Kerapoxy Easy Design

Both Kerapoxy Adhesive and Kerapoxy Easy Design are two-component epoxy solutions from Mapei. Kerapoxy Adhesive is engineered specifically for rigid, high-strength bonding of ceramic and stone, providing exceptional chemical resistance as a dedicated adhesive. In contrast, Kerapoxy Easy Design is a versatile epoxy grout and adhesive, often chosen where a decorative, chemical-resistant grout line is as critical as the bond itself. Kerapoxy Adhesive prioritises uncompromising bond integrity in challenging environments, while Easy Design offers a dual-purpose solution for both bonding and aesthetics.

Applying Mapei Kerapoxy Adhesive: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Substrates must be cured, dry, clean and sound. Remove dust, laitance, oils, paints and waxes. Keep surfaces dry—do not apply to wet substrates.

    Cement-based

Cure per thickness; mechanically prepare if required to achieve a clean, open surface.

    Gypsum/Anhydrite

Consolidate with Primer EP or Eco Prim T; allow to dry.

Timing: Only proceed when moisture is within acceptable limits and the area is at +10 °C to +30 °C.
Pro Tip: Dry-fit large pieces and plan lifts to minimise time off the trowel.
  2. Mixing

Use complete pre-dosed packs (A:B = 80:20 by weight). Add B into A; mix with a low-speed drill until a smooth, uniform paste forms.

    Low-Speed Mechanical Mix

Keep speed low to avoid heat build-up and pot life loss.

    Small Batches

If splitting, weigh accurately to maintain 80:20 ratio. Do not estimate by eye.

Timing: Pot life ~45 min at 23 °C; warmer conditions shorten this.
Pro Tip: Stage materials and set-out before mixing to maximise working time.
  3. Trowelling & Placement

Spread with a suitable notched trowel. For special shapes/bullnose, butter the back to fill voids. Press tiles to ensure full contact.

    Open/Adjustment Times

Open time ~60 min; adjustment ~130 min at 23 °C. Monitor in warmer conditions.

    Thickness

Apply up to 10 mm in a single coat as required to true the bed.

    Timing: Light traffic 10–12 h; ready for use ~2 days (23 °C).
Pro Tip: Check bond by lifting a tile to verify full buttering and coverage on critical areas.
  4. Cleaning

While fresh, clean tools/tiles with water. Once hardened, remove mechanically or with a suitable remover.

Pro Tip: Keep a bucket and sponges ready—early wipe-down avoids time-consuming mechanical removal.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Flexible joints or those subject to movement. This adhesive cures rigidly and cannot accommodate structural movement.
  • Not for: Application outside the +10°C to +30°C temperature range. Performance will be compromised.
  • Not for: Wet, dirty, or crumbly surfaces. The bond requires a clean, dry, and structurally sound substrate.
  • Do not: Add water or solvents to adjust workability. The pre-dosed components are designed for optimal performance.
  • Do not: Modify the mixing ratio of Part A and Part B. Incorrect ratios will prevent proper hardening.

Safety and handling

Danger: Kerapoxy Adhesive causes severe skin burns and eye damage. It may also cause an allergic skin reaction. It is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
